Is Julio Rodriguez the AL ROTY?

According to most of the top MLB sportsbooks, Rodriguez is now the firm +200 betting favorite to win the AL Rookie of the Year award with Houston Astros shortstop and fellow Dominican Republic native Jeremy Pena the only other AL Rookie within striking distance at +300 in many betting boards.

J-Rod even has shorter odds via Caesars Sportsbook. There, he is listed at +175 with Pena chasing him with his +195 odds. Rodriguez is booked at a much shorter +160 odds at Bet365 USA with Pena at +224. Meanwhile, Rodriguez is listed at +140 while Pena is pegged at +200 via BetMGM.

In early May, a hot start moved Pena to the top of the odds board at +300 odds. Rodriguez overtook Pena after winning AL Rookie of the Month honors for May 2022

J-Rod Named AL Rookie of the Year for May 2022

Rodriguez is the 5th player from the Mariners to win Rookie of the Month honors, joining Michael Pineda, Mike Carp, Rafael Soriano, and Ichiro Suzuki ( who won it four times). However, Rodriguez stands out as the youngest player in franchise history to win the said monthly award.

The 21-year-old from the Dominican Republic led all rookies with six home runs last month. He also ranked first among first-year players with a total of 34 hits during the month. Rodriguez’s five stolen bases were also the most among freshmen MLB players while his 156 wRC+ was the best among AL rookies. Rodriguez’s batting average of .309 was third among rookies and his 17 RBIs last month were the second-most by any player making his debut MLB season.

He recorded 9 multi-hit games in May including six games with 3 or more hits. Rodriguez became the first player aged 21-or younger to tally at least that many 3+ hits games since Manny Machado had 7 in May 2013. He also joined Ken Griffey Jr. and Alex Rodriguez as the only Mariners player aged 21 or younger to reach base five times in a game, doing so on May 15th in New York.
