- Sacramento’s Keegan Murray has seen his Rookie of the Year odds cut down from +1200 to +750 after the NBA 2K23 Summer League.
- Murray was named the Summer League MVP after averaging 23.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.
- The former Iowa Hawkeye was drafted 4th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft and is the highest-picked Hawkeye in school history.
When the 2K23 NBA Summer League began, it was Chet Holmgren, Paolo Banchero, and Jabari Smith who opened as the betting favorites to win MVP honors. But when all was said and done, it was Keegan Murray who took home the award.
Holmgren’s sensational Summer League debut took him to the top of the betting boards at +1100 odds while Banchero and Smith were listed at +1600 and +1800. Trendon Watford was named MVP of the 2022 Summer League title game as the Portland Trail Blazers defeated the New York Knicks for the title. But none of them won the tournament’s highest individual honors.

The NBA announced last Monday that Sacramento Kings rookie Keegan Murray has been named the NBA 2K23 Summer League MVP. Murray was one of the most consistent performers in the tournament and averaged 23.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 50% overall and 40% from behind the three-point arc in four games played in Las Vegas.
Aside from being named Summer League MVP, Murray also led the cast for the NBA 2K23 Summer League First Team. That group included Tari Eason of the Houston Rockets, Quentin Grimes of the New York Knicks, Sandro Mamukelashvili of the Milwaukee Bucks, and Cam Thomas of the Brooklyn Nets who opened with the second-best odds to win MVP honors at +1300 odds.
Murray was the 4th overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft, behind the highly-touted trio of Banchero, Holmgren, and Smith. The 21-year-old is the highest-drafted player in Iowa Hawkeyes history. Murray boosted his draft stock with a significant improvement during his sophomore season where he averaged 16 points better and made 66 three-pointers, 50 more than his production from his freshman year.

Despite being the 4th player picked in the 2022 NBA Draft, Murray opened with only the 5th best odds to win the 2023 NBA Rookie of the Year award at online sportsbook BetOnline last June 23rd. When he began showing his wares in the Summer League earlier this month, those odds climbed to +900. After winning Summer League MVP honors, Murray’s odds went down further to +750.
As it stands right now, it is still top overall pick Paolo Banchero who is the consensus betting favorite to win the 2023 NBA Rookie of the Year award. Banchero is currently listed at +350 at most of the top NBA betting sites while Chet Holmgren is second at odds of +375 to +400. Smith is still third with odds at the +400 to +550 range while Murray is moving closer at +650 to +750, depending on which of the top sportsbooks you are looking at.
The 6-8 forward will join All-Star big man Domantas Sabonis in the Sacramento front court as the Kings try to end their NBA-record 16-year playoff drought. If Murray can carry over his solid play during the regular season, the Kings should be in fighting shape to do that, while Murray should give the Top 3 picks a run for their money in the Rookie of the Year race.
