Kenny Atkinson Favored to Be the Next Head Coach of Sacramento Kings

Kenny Atkinson With Sacramento Kings Background

  • Kenny Atkinson has opened as the 4/1 betting favorite to become the Sacramento Kings’ next head coach.
  • Former Blazers head coach Terry Stotts is second at 5/1 while Spurs assistant Becky Hammon is next at 11/2 while Interim Kings head coach Alvin Gentry is just 4th at 7/1.
  • The Kings fired Luke Walton last Sunday after a 6-11 start to the season.

Former Brooklyn Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson is on top of a BetOnline betting board that asks who the next full-time head coach of the Sacramento Kings would be.

The Kings fired Luke Walton last Sunday after failing to transform the Kings into NBA royalty after two-plus seasons at the helm. Walton ended his Kings head coaching gig with a record of 68-93, including 6-11 to start the current season.

Atkinson, Stotts, Hammon, and Gentry Lead Favorites

At 4/1, Atkinson has been among the betting favorites in the recent coaching vacancies in the league but he ended up signing with the Golden State Warriors as Steve Kerr’s lead assistant. Known as one of the best coaches in player development, Atkinson was head coach of the Brooklyn Nets from 2016-20 and was credited for developing players like D’Angelo Russell, Spencer Dinwiddie, Caris LeVert, Jarrett Allen, and Joe Harris.

Terry Stotts has the second-best odds to replace Walton at 5/1. Stotts and the Portland Trail Blazers mutually agreed to part ways during the offseason after nine seasons together. Stotts led Portland to eight straight playoff appearances but was never able to take the Blazers to the next level. He finished his Portland coaching career with a record of 402-318 but won only two playoff series in eight postseason appearances.

Spurs assistant Becky Hammon was a finalist in the Blazers’ coaching search during the offseason, making her the first female coaching candidate to make it that far in an NBA coaching search. Hammon was also among the betting favorites in the other head coaching vacancies in the league during the offseason but end up returning to the Spurs after failing to land any of them. Hammon is currently an 11/2 favorite in this latest head coaching search.

Alvin Gentry Named Interim Head Coach

Interestingly, Alvin Gentry is just fourth in the BetOnline oddsboard at 7/1 despite being named as the team’s interim head coach. According to sources, Gentry and the Kings management are discussing potential benchmarks of success for the rest of the season. Those benchmarks would determine whether Gentry would keep the job on a long-term basis.

Gentry joined the Kings during the offseason as Walton’s lead assistant. The 65-year old has spent more than 30-year in the league as an assistant and head coach. He began as an assistant for the San Antonio Spurs during the 1988-89 season. During his stint as head coach Gentry compiled a record of 510-595 and had stops in Miami, Detroit, L.A. Clippers, and Phoenix Suns. Prior to joining the Kings, he was the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans during the last five seasons.

The Kings lost as -5 point betting favorites to a very depleted Philadelphia 76ers team on Monday night in Gentry’s return to head coaching. The Sixers played without four starters but were still able to outplay the Kings and beat them 102-94 behind Tyrese Maxey’s 24 points. The loss was Sacramento’s fourth straight and 8th in their last nine games. Gentry and the Kings will try to end their skid on November 24th at home against the Blazers.
