— The Naismith Trophy (@NaismithTrophy) January 31, 2022
Last week, Tshiebwe was named as the Naismith Trophy Player of the Week after leading the Wildcats to back-to-back wins over Mississippi State and no. 5 Kansas. Tshiebwe had a monster 21 points and 22 rebounds effort against the Bulldogs and had another double-double with 17 points and 14 boards against the Jayhawks.
After grabbing 15 rebounds during Kentucky’s 66-55 win over Alabama last Sunday, Tshiebwe upped his season average to 15.2 rebounds per game this season. If he can keep up that pace, he could end up with the highest rebounding average in NCAA Division I basketball in the last 40 seasons.
To put things in perspective, here are other notable names and their highest rebounding season in college basketball: Tim Duncan 14.7 RPG, Shaquille O’Neal 14.6 RPG, Kenneth Faried 14.5 RPG, Blake Griffin 14.4 RPG, and Dikembe Mutombo 12.1 RPG. The only player to hit 15.0 RPG during that span was Fardaws Aimaq of the Utah Valley Wolverines of the WAC in 2020-21.
