L.A. Lakers Have the Worst Point Differential Against the Betting Spread This Season

Lakers With Purple NBA Background

  • The Los Angeles Lakers have the worst point differential against the spread at -5.9 points.
  • L.A. lost to the Boston Celtics 130-108 as +1.5 point underdogs on Friday night.
  • The Lakers have dropped in most of the NBA championship oddsboards with the Warriors overtaking them as second favorites.

The Los Angeles Lakers haven’t been just losing games they are supposed to win this season. The Lakers have also been terrible at covering the spread. And while they are not the worst ATS team in the league, L.A. has the largest spread difference among all NBA teams.

Entering Friday’s game against the Boston Celtics, the Lakers had an 8-8 SU and 6-10 ATS record. In 16 games played, Los Angeles has been a -5.3 points ATS this season. That number just got worse as the Lakers were blown out by the Celtics 130-108 as 1.5 point underdogs or a -20.5 points differential against the spread.

Lakers’ 3rd Quarter Woes

A huge part of the Lakers’ struggles has been their 3rd quarter woes. Entering Wednesday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks, the Lakers were getting outscored by an average of 5.9 points in the third quarter. Although they did fix that somewhat by outscoring the Bucks 30-21 in the third quarter of that game, Los Angeles was outscored by 12 points on Friday night by the Celtics during the said quarter.

The Lakers led the Celtics by 8 points after the first quarter 38-30. They even covered the +0.5 point halftime spread by leading 61-60 at the half. But what was a competitive game quickly became a blowout when the Lakers allowed the Celtics to go on a 14-4 run to start the second half. What was a one-point Lakers lead turned to a 9-point deficit after just 3:21 minutes played.

Los Angeles entered Friday’s game with the second worse plus/minus points in the third quarter at -92, behind only the Pistons’ -93. With the Pistons getting outscored 30-19 in their game against the Golden State Warriors, the tally is now -104 for the Pistons and -103 for the Lakers. It’s not nice for a team like the Lakers to be ranked next to the Pistons who are tied for the longest odds to win the 2022 NBA championship.

Latest NBA Championship Odds

With their struggles, the best NBA sportsbooks have started to fade the Lakers even if they have not played 20% of their 2021-22 season schedule yet. Online sportsbook WynnBET has moved the Warriors to second favorite at +550 with the Lakers falling to 3rd at +750 with the Bucks closing in on L.A. at +750. The same move was seen in most sportsbooks.

At BetOnline, the Nets are safely on top at +275 while the Warriors have surged to second at +650. The Lakers meanwhile have drifted to +675. Caesars Sportsbook has Brooklyn at +260, Golden State at +700, and the Lakers at +800. Bet365 USA currently lists the Nets at +260, the Dubs at +600, and the Lakers at +800.

BetMGM has been more conservative, putting both the Warriors and Lakers at +700, with the Nets as +260 betting favorites. PointsBet USA is also in the same boat as they have both the Dubs and Lakers at +650 and the Nets at +275. But after Friday’s blowout loss to the Lakers, it’s just a matter of time that they will follow the lead.
