Playing in his country’s first ever game in the Olympics, Doncic exploded for 48 points while also grabbing 11 rebounds and issuing 5 assists as Slovenia defeated Argentina 118-100 in the Preliminary Round opener in Tokyo. Doncic made six three pointers and shot 18-29 from the field while also adding three blocks in an All-Time great Olympic performance.
Doncic’s 48 points is the second-highest scoring game in the history of Olympic basketball, behind only Oscar Schmidt’s 55 points scored in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. The Dallas Mavericks guard already had 31 points at the half and was on pace to break Schmidt’s record but with a big lead in the second half, he didn’t have to do too much. Doncic was pulled from the game with still more than enough time to break the record. But For Doncic, it’s not about the records.
Although he did not break Schimdt’s record, Doncic’s 48 puts him in a tie with Australia’ Eddie Palubinskas who was also two points short of 50 points in a game during the 1976 Montreal Olympic games. More importantly, Slovenia picked up the victory and they moved closer to advancing to the medal round. Next up will be host Japan on July 29th before closing up the preliminary round on August 1.

The Slovenians head to Thursday’s date with the home team as a massive -20.5-point betting favorite at the spread line and a huge -2500 odds on favorite at the BetOnline.ag moneyline. As for their gold medal hopes, Slovenia is currently fifth at +1800 behind the United Sates, Australia, Spain, and France. But with Luka Doncic at the helm, Slovenia could be the dark horse in this tournament.
Slovenia has been a country on the rise in international competition. Behind Luka Doncic, they won the Eurobasket in 2017 and then earlier this month, they qualified for the Tokyo Olympics by defeating Lithuania in their home court. Again, it was Doncic who led the way for Slovenians.
Despite losing their opening game, the Americans are still favored to win the gold medal for the fourth consecutive Olmypic gold medal in Men’s basketball at the Tokyo Olympics. As of the latest BetOnline odds, Team USA is still a formidable -300 odds on favorite.
