There was a lot of fuss about Matthew Stafford going to the L.A. Rams during the offseason. Now that the season has begun, we know why.
Stafford’s L.A. Rams debut lived up to the hype as he delivered a record-setting performance that served notice, not just to the other teams in the league, but also to the players who are on top of the early MVP odds boards.
The Rams and Stafford were already among the preseason favorites to win the Super Bowl and NFL MVP, respectively. But preseason odds are based on perception. Now they have at least one game to back it up.
Stafford’s Debut Lived Up to The Hype
321 passing yards. 3 TDs.

Stafford completed 20 out of 26 passes, connecting with six different receivers for 321 passing yards with three touchdowns to become the first player in NFL history to throw for 300 yards with 3 touchdowns without an interception in his debut for a team. He also posted a career-best 156.1 passer rating, surpassing the 148.6 mark he set as a Detroit Lion while setting an NFL record for a QB debut. His 12.3 yards per attempt was also a career-high, beating out his previous best of 11.1 Y/A.More importantly, he got the win for the Rams who proved their worth as Super Bowl contenders.
Expectations were high after the Rams acquired Stafford. After opening with +2000 odds to win Super Bowl LVI, the Rams saw their price shorten to +1400 to +1200 after the trade, depending on which of the best NFL sportsbooks you use. Los Angeles also supplanted Green Bay as the second favorite to win the NFC while also edging out the 49ers in the NFC West preseason odds boards.
Stafford has always been known for his big-game passing. It’s just that he never had the team to showcase that ability. Getting traded to Los Angeles meant a significant upgrade in weaponry, coaching, and system. And Sunday proved to be the moment many, including Lions fans, had been waiting for: proof that Stafford will shine outside Detroit. The question now is whether he can sustain it. For the short term, the oddsmakers say yes.

WynnBET currently has the shortest price on Stafford at +750 where he only trails Mahomes’ +550. The Rams QB is also at +800 via DraftKings, same as Kyler Murray. There, Mahomes is listed at +550 and Brady at +900. PointsBet has him at +1200, third behind Mahomes (+600) and Brady (+1000) while Stafford is listed at +1300 at the Caesars Sportsbook after Mahomes (+500), Brady (+1000), and Murray (+1000).
At the BetOnline App, Stafford was listed at +1200 after opening night. Now he’s up to +900 and in 4th spot, behind only Patrick Mahomes (+425), Tom Brady (+725), and Dak Prescott (+800). Stafford opened at 18/1 in the BetMGM NFL MVP betting lines last summer. He is now at 11/1 at that sportsbook, tied with Tom Brady, and with only Patrick Mahomes (6.50) and Kyler Murray (10.0) ahead.
Bet365 has him a little farther from the top at +1400, the same odds as Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson. At that sportsbook, Mahomes (+450), Brady (+1000), Russell Wilson (+1200), and Kyler Murray (+1200) are ahead of him. But regardless of what numbers the best NFL sportsbooks have right now, there’s no question that Stafford’s MVP odds have significantly improved and that he’s gaining on the leaders after just one week.
