Mavs Championship Odds Slide After Losing Jalen Brunson

Dallas Mavericks NBA Odds

  • The Dallas Mavericks’ title odds have moved from +1200 to +2200 since the start of the free agency period.
  • Dallas lost guard Jalen Brunson who has agreed to a $104 million deal with the New York Knicks.
  • The Mavs have not been able to sign the top players linked to them before the start of free agency.

While many NBA teams have seen their championship odds improve – significantly or not, since the start of free agency, the Dallas Mavericks are a team that has gone the opposite direction.

The Mavericks opened with +1200 odds to win the 2023 NBA title. Those odds faded to +1800 after Jalen Brunson looked like he was going to go to New York. Those odds have further drifted to +2200 via the BetOnline App after it was confirmed that Brunson was signing a $104 million deal with the Knicks.

Mavs Lose Brunson to the Knicks

While the Knicks will be penalized for tampering regarding their agreement with Jaylen Brunson, the deal will not be voided and Brunson will become the first player in NBA history to sign a $100 million deal with a new team despite having never played for an All-Star team.

Brunson enjoyed a breakout campaign with the Mavericks last season. The 25-year-old averaged a career-high 16.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game during the regular season before taking his game to the next level in the postseason where he averaged 21.6 points per game in 18 playoff games played. With Brunson breaking out, the Mavs were able to reach the Western Conference Finals where they lost to the eventual champions Golden State Warriors.

Although they are still longshots to win the 2023 NBA championship, the addition of Brunson has caused a noticeable shift in the Knicks’ championship odds. New York was at +25000 odds before signing Brunson. They are currently listed at +12500 via Caesars Sportsbook and PointsBet USA and +800 via Bet365 USA. Meanwhile, the Mavs have stumbled in the betting boards.

Mavs Can’t Sign Any Free Agents

Brunson’s departure isn’t the only reason why the Mavs’ title odds have gone down. While the other contenders have upgraded their rosters by adding new players, the Mavs’ missing out on the first wave of free agency did not help their title odds. Losing Brunson was just one thing for the Mavs. Their inability to land the top free agents linked to them is another story.

Dallas was a +250 to land Kevin Looney, +300 to add Mo Bamba, and +250 to sign Victor Oladipo. The three, however, ended up signing with their original teams, leaving Dallas empty-handed. Dallas was able to sign Javale McGee to a one-year deal. But so far, that has been it for the Mavericks.

Meanwhile, the Timberwolves acquired Rudy Gobert. Atlanta made a move for Dejounte Murray, the Sixers added P.J. Tucker while the Lakers have signed several role players and are the favorites to land Kyrie Irving. Those teams have seen their title odds move up after getting busy early in free agency. Meanwhile, Mavericks fans are still waiting how their team will upgrade after losing Jalen Brunson.
