Max Scherzer Moves New NL Cy Young Betting Favorite After Sunday’s Pitching Gem

Max Scherzer With Dodgers Background

  • Max Scherzer has overtaken Walker Buehler for the lead in the NL Cy Young betting.
  • Following Sunday’s gem against the Padres, Scherzer is now the betting favorite at +150 at BetOnline.
  • Corbin Burnes is second at +180 while Buehler has faded to a +190.

Just when we thought that the NL Cy Young race finally had clarity, Max Scherzer has come out of nowhere to steal the thunder with one of the most dominant runs we’ve seen in years.

Walker Buehler seemingly had control of the NL Cy Young odds boards when he jumped to minus money odds at the end of August. But after a poor outing against the Giants earlier this month, Buehler dopped from -125 to +170 with Corbin Burnes slightly behind him at +180. At this point, It looked like Buehler and Burnes had turned the betting boards into a two man race.

But after a 13 strikeout performance in his hometown against the Cardinals earlier this month, Scherzer’s odds improved from +1300 to +220 to make it a three-way battle.

Scherzer Making his Cy Young Case

When the L.A. Dodgers made the blockbuster deal to acquire Scherzer from the Nationals at the trade deadline, they knew they were getting a sure-fire Hall-of-Famer who is still pitching at All-Star level. They didn’t know they would be getting more.

Since coming over to Los Angeles, Scherzer is having arguably one of the best stretches of his career. As a Dodger, he has posted a 6-0 record with a ridiculous ERA of 0.88 with 72 strikeouts. Los Angeles is also 8-0 in his eight starts and Scherzer is the first player in MLB history to lower his ERA average in his first 8 starts with a new team.

After picking up a win against the Giants last, Scherzer made his Cy Young case on Sunday with a pitching gem against the San Diego Padres. Scherzer not only carried a perfect game into the 8th inning, he also had an immaculate inning and became the 19th pitcher in MLB history to record at lest 3,000 strikeouts.

Entering Sunday, Burnes had the better ERA between the three contenders at 2.25. After last night’s gem, Scherzer bettered that by moving from 2.28 to 2.17. If the trend continues, there is a chance that the NL Cy Young race could go down to the last start. The bad news for Burnes and Buehler is that Scherzer is smoking right now.

A Steal to Win the NL Cy Young?

Just like that, Scherzer is now the +150 betting favorite to win the Cy Young at PointsBet. Before the last update, both Scherzer and Buehler were listed at +150. Buehler has faded to +250 while Burnes remained at +160 and in second place. Both the BetOnline App and Bet365 also have Scherzer at +150. At these two sportsbooks, Corbin Burnes is second at +180 while Buehler is +190 at BetOnline and +200 at Bet365.

Scherzer is also the +135 odds on favorite at FanDuel with Corbin Burnes behind him at +200. Buehler is third but fading at +250. At BetMGM, Mad Max is even at a shooter +125 with Burnes still at +200 and Buehler a longer +300. Meanwhile, the longest odds on Scherzer right now is at +160 via the Caesars Sportsbook. Burnes and Buehler are listed at +190 and +225 at Caesars, respectively.

Mad Max is even surging stronger at DraftKings whose current NL Cy Young Odds have Scherzer at even money. Burnes is at his shortest here too at +150 while Buehler has dropped to an even longer +330. Meanwhile, BetRivers has the second-closest gap between Scherzer and Burnes right now at +150 and +175, respectively.
