  • It’s been more than eight months since Conor McGregor competed in MMA.
  • The Irish superstar recently challenged Dustin Poirier to a charity fight in Ireland.
  • This McGregor vs. Poirier charity fight is now rumored to take place on December 12th.

Conor McGregor is one of the most polarizing fighters to ever compete in MMA. Unfortunately, he’s been out of action since January. Conor now seems determined to compete against Dustin Poirier without the direct support of the UFC. New reports claim the McGregor vs. Poirier charity fight could be taking place in Ireland on December 12th.

Many are expressing doubt that this “fight” will come together. The UFC won’t want two of its best fighters competing outside the promotion. Today, we’re going to take a look at what exactly is happening between McGregor and Poirier.

Let’s get into it!

Conor McGregor’s Feud With the UFC is Still Ongoing

Between 2013 and 2016, Conor McGregor took the MMA world by storm. Using elite striking skills and a larger-than-life personality, he became the most popular fighter in the sport. During his tenure with the UFC promotion, he earned both the featherweight and lightweight titles.

Conor is now a household name around the world. Anytime he steps into the Octagon, it becomes more than just a fight. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that the UFC has been hesitant to see him compete. The promotion would lose out on money without the massive gate that McGregor always brings in.

This inability to compete seems to be irking Conor. Not long ago, he announced his retirement from MMA before claiming he was set to box against Manny Pacquiao. To the surprise of many fans, Pacquiao confirmed that fight negotiations were taking place.

Conor then released a set of text messages between himself and UFC President Dana White. The conversation revealed that McGregor had asked to be scheduled into a fight several times.

Releasing the screenshots of these conversations didn’t sit well with White. He told the media it was “breaking man-code” and doubled-down on his assertion that McGregor turned down several fight offers. This feud is ongoing and it seems both parties are unwilling to concede.

Historically speaking, this is a fight the UFC wins. The promotion knows the value that Conor brings in, however, and will likely look to settle this dispute without any kind of legal action. In the meantime, Conor McGregor seems interested in competing in one way or another.

Could we actually see him fight Dustin Poirer for charity?

The McGregor vs. Poirier Charity Fight is Rumored to Take Place on December 12th

The UFC’s lightweight division is one of the best in the sport. It’s here that fighters like Khabib Nurmagomedov, Conor McGregor, and Dustin Poirier all fight. After Poirier’s incredible win over Dan Hooker this past June, many felt he should take on McGregor with the winner receiving the next shot at the championship.

This fight may come together. Based on new reports, it might not be taking place under the direct promotion of the UFC, though. Conor challenged Poirier to a fight for charity outside the UFC. Dustin seemingly agreed and the two men then began looking to come up with a date.

It now seems that the McGregor vs. Poirier charity fight will be taking place on December 12th in Ireland. Conor released a Tweet of a fight poster confirming this bout. You can check it out below.

“Martial art sparring match in aid of charity. Dublin, December 12th 2020. Free to air spar. McGregor vs Poirier. List of chosen charities available soon. All donations welcome.”

No one doubts that these two men are willing to fight each other. In reality, though, this fight seems highly unlikely to take place under this scenario. As we already mentioned, both would likely face serious disciplinary action from the UFC for competing outside the promotion.

It also seems unlikely that both men would want to take the risk of fighting without a purse. Dustin Poirier is one of the lightweight division’s top contenders. Losing to McGregor would lower his stock and wouldn’t even result in a paycheck.

According to Conor, this fight is now confirmed for December 12th. We’ll continue offering updates on this potential bout over the next few weeks.

Odds on the McGregor-Poirier Exhibition Are Being Offered Online

MMA fans love to see things happen outside the box. On the surface, the idea of Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier fighting is extremely exciting. Not long after the reports of this matchup surfaced, online sportsbooks began offering odds on the fight winners.

MyBookie, one of the best online sportsbooks in the US, is offering some incredible odds on the McGregor vs. Poirier charity fight. Keep in mind that these can change. The odds may also be scrapped entirely if this fight fails to come together.

For now, Conor McGregor is listed as the -200 favorite. He won the first time he fought Poirier all the way back in 2014. Despite his inactivity as of late, the oddsmakers seem to feel he’d get the job done again in a rematch.

Dustin Poirier is one of the most underrated fighters in the UFC. He proved he’s still at the top of his game recently with a thrilling “Fight of the Year” win against Dan Hooker. He’s currently listed as a +160 underdog to get a win over Conor McGregor in December.

It’s an interesting time for the sport of MMA. A number of massive events are scheduled to take place over the next few months. We’ll need to wait and see how officials within the UFC respond to the potential charity fight between two of their best lightweights.
