The Mets’ longest live odds were at +6000 before they made that insane comeback. At that stage in the game, they were trailing the Phillies 1-7 and were down to their final three outs. Philadelphia’s live odds swelled to -200000 ( yes that’s not a typo ) at Caesars Sportsbook but that’s when the improbable happened.
It’s only the third time in Mets franchise history where they have come back from at least a six-run deficit in the 9th inning to win the game. The last time that the Mets won a game when trailing by six runs at the start of the 9th inning was on September 13, 1997, when Carl Everett drilled a game-tying grand slam with two outs in the 9th. But that game went to extra innings where the Mets beat the Expos. On Thursday, they didn’t need to.
Starling Marte led off the inning with an infield single and scored on Francisco Lindor’s two-run home run. Mark Canha added an RBI infield single to make things worse for the Phillies’ Moneyline backers. Then, J.B. Davis, had a pinch-hit RBI double before Nemo delivered a game-tying two-run single and scored off Marte’s double to give the Mets the win, ending a streak of 857 consecutive losses for MLB teams trailing by six or more runs in the 9th inning.
Too Early to Get Excited

Thursday’s win was the highest point of the season for the Mets who are currently the NL East leaders with their 19-9 SU record. New York is current 5.5 games up on Miami, 6.5 atop defending World Series Champions Atlanta, and 7 games ahead of Philadelphia in the divisional standings. According to the best MLB betting sites, they are also the -150 betting favorite to win the division with the Braves second at +200 and the Phillies third at +500.
The Mets opened with the 12th best odds to win the World Series at +2000 last November 3rd. After signing Max Scherzer, New York saw their title odds shorten to +1100, third-best in the MLB. Now that they have the third-best record in baseball early in the season, the Mets have moved up to second favorites with their +800 odds trailing only the Dodgers’ +500. New York is also second behind L.A. (+240) in the NL betting boards at +450 odds.
It’s still May and it may be too early to get excited. But the Mets have one of the best offenses in baseball to start the season. They rank 1st overall with 128 runs scored this season and are 2nd in batting average at .258. New York also ranks 1st in On-Base Percentage at .337 and is 12th overall in slugging percentage at .386. For a team that is looking to make it back to the postseason for the first time in six years, this is the kind of start that they needed.
