Justin Gaethje And Michael Chandler UFC

  • Michael Chandler and Justin Gaethje have agreed to fight at UFC 268 on November 6th.
  • Chandler lost to Charles Oliveira at UFC 262 last May in a bout for the UFC lightweight title.
  • Gathje’s last fight was also a title fight loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 254 last October.

Former UFC lightweight title challengers Michael Chandler and Justin Gaethje will square off at UFC 268 on November 6th which is being eyed for Madison Square Garden in New York.

The bout is not yet official as no contract has ben signed but sources have confirmed to ESPN and MMAJunkie that both fighters have verbally agreed to a deal.

Chandler Claims Gaethje Ducked Him

The bout between Chandler and Gaethje has been talked about since last year when the former signed with the UFC from Bellator. Gaethje was supposed to welcome Chandler in the UFC but The Highlight ended up as the backup fighter when Chandler fought Oliveira at UFC 262 for the belt that Khabib Nurmagomedov vacated .

Since then, the two have gone back and forth in social media. The tension heightened just recently when Chandler claimed that Gaethje was ducking him and that the former WSOF lightweight champion had turned down three or four offers to fight him. Of course, Gaethje denied that claim and turned the tables on Chandler by saying he was already three weeks into training camp when the UFC announced that Chandler would face Oliveira for the belt instead of him.

With Oliveira expected to defend the lightweight title against Dustin Poirier late this year, the winner between Chandler and Gaethje will likely get the next shot at the belt early next year, regardless of who ends up with the belt at the end of this year.

UFC 268 Fight Card Shaping Up

Earlier this week, the UFC announced that the promotion’s planned return to the Madison Square Garden on November will be headlined by UFC welterweight Kamaru Usman who will make his 5th title defense against no. 1 contender Colby Covington.

Like Chandler and Gaethje, Usman and Covington have been going at each other in social media for quite some time now. Usman defeated Covington at UFC 245 in 2019 during his first title defense. Covington has not fought since defeating Tyron Woodley last September 2020.

Once the Chandler vs Gaethje bout is signed, it will be only be the second-known bout for the UFC’s return to the Mecca of Hoops. And given its high-profile nature, there is a good chance that it will be the co-main event of the bout. And it should be because if this were another fight card, a bout between Michael Chandler and Justin Gaethje would easily be the main event.
