Miesha Tate Favored to Win Flyweight Debut Versus Lauren Murphy

Miesha Tate has opened as the slight betting favorite against Lauren Murphy in their upcoming flyweight bout.

According to the top UFC betting sites, ‘Cupcake’ is the -162 favorite to win the fight with ‘Lucky’ hitting the opening betting boards at +136 odds.

Tate and Murphy were expected to share the Octagon at UFC 276. However, Murphy tested positive for COVID-19 in the weeks leading to the event, and the bout was canceled. However, the UFC ended up rescheduling the bout for UFC Long Island on July 16th at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.

Ketlen Vieira Bloodies Miesha Tate in Decision Win

Tate will be making the move to flyweight after going 1-1 since returning from a five-year retirement. The former UFC women’s bantamweight champion scored a TKO win over Marion Reneau in a Performance of the Night-winning effort at UFC Vegas 31 in her first fight back. However, Tate was bloodied as she suffered a unanimous decision loss to Ketlen Vieira in her most recent bout last November 20, 2021.

The 35-year-old from Tacoma, Washington is also a former Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion. Tate joined the UFC in 2013 and after losing her first two assignments inside the Octagon, she won five consecutive bouts including a submission win over Holly Holm at UFC 196 where she won the bantamweight belt. Overall, Tate has a record of 19-8 with four knockouts and seven submission victories.

Cupcake opened as the betting underdog in her two bouts since coming back from retirement. She opened as the +115 underdog against Reneau but eventually closed at -180. Meanwhile, Tate was listed at +140 when the betting lines for her last bout against Vieira opened. She closed at even money odds in that bout and lost it on points

Valentina Shevchenko TKO’s Lauren Murphy

Murphy is coming off a failed attempt to win the UFC women’s flyweight championship from Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 266 last September 25, 2021. The setback snapped a five-fight winning run for Murphy whose last previous loss was in 2018 against Sijara Eubanks.

The 38-year-old from Anchorage, Alaska is a former Alaska FC and Alaska Cage Fighting Championship women’s featherweight champion. Murphy was also Invicta FC bantamweight champion before joining the UFC in 2014. She started slow with only two wins in her first six bouts before going on that winning streak of five bouts. Overall, the no. 3 ranked flyweight in the UFC is 15-5 with eight knockouts and one submission victory.

Murphy was the betting underdog in five out of her last seven bouts but is 5-2 during that stretch. She defeated Joanne Calderwood, Andrea Lee, and Mara Romero Borella with the plus money sign written next to her name, including as a big +250 bottom dog when she defeated Lee.
