Here’s What We Know About Fabricio Werdum’s PFL Withdrawal

Fabricio Werdum won the UFC heavyweight championship in June of 2015. He went on to alternate wins and losses in his career and eventually parted ways with the UFC in 2020. His first bout in the Professional Fighters League took place this past May.

Some serious controversy surrounded that fight. At one point, Werdum seemed to force his opponent, Renen Ferreira, to tap. The referee didn’t see this and Ferreira ended up stopping Werdum via TKO late in the first round.

The PFL then booked Fabricio to compete against Brandon Sayles on June 25. Many were excited to see how Werdum bounced back from his tough loss in the promotion. Unfortunately, news broke last week that the former champion had to pull out of this fight for undisclosed reasons.

More details on Fabricio Werdum’s withdrawal have now come out. Werdum’s doctor claims that brain swelling after his bout against Ferreira in May led to this fight cancellation. You can check out some of Fabricio’ss comments below.

“I’ve hidden many injuries to be able to fight when I was in my 20s, but now I need to prioritize my health and listen to the [doctor],” Werdum said. “I want to be able to enjoy my daughters and see them growing, and that’s the right thing to do at the moment. I’m fine, and I’ll be able to return to training soon.”

That is certainly a good reason to pull out of this fight. Hopefully, Fabricio is able to heal up before long. No one wants to see him back in the cage before he is physically ready to do so. In the meantime, the PFL’s heavyweight tournament will continue.

Who is Favored to Win the PFL’s Heavyweight Tournament?

The PFL has one of the most exciting rosters of any MMA promotion today. Each of the divisions here is loaded with talent. Many have enjoyed watching the PFL heavyweights work toward a $1 million prize.

Many felt that Fabricio Werdum was the favorite to win the heavyweight tournament. He lost his first bout, yet seemed determined to make a comeback in May. Unfortunately, Fabricio Werdum’s PFL withdrawal has crushed some hopes that he will end up as the tournament winner.

Renan Ferreira has made himself one of the favorites after his win over “Vai Cavalo” last month. He is massive for the weight class and has extremely powerful strikes. Fans are excited to see how he fares against some of the other fighters in the promotion.

Denis Goltsov is another favorite. He is 26-6 as a professional and looked great in his first PFL bout last May. The Russian striker has serious potential to become the next heavyweight champion for the Professional Fighters League.

Ali Isaev is thought by many as the most exciting heavyweight in the PFL right now. He is undefeated at 9-0 and is one of the best wrestlers in the division. He’s 37 years old, though, and some question how long he can compete at the highest level.
