The UFC continues to work on getting back to normal. In a little over a week, this promotional company will put on a major event in Jacksonville, Florida. This week, UFC president Dana White announced that a new Ultimate Fighter season is now in the works.
It’s exciting news for MMA fans. The Ultimate Fighter television show helped to get the UFC to where it is today. Today, we’re going to talk about what might be in store for this season. We’ll also discuss some of the UFC’s plans for the near future.
Let’s get into it!
The UFC is Almost Ready to Resume Operations
The past few weeks have been some of the strangest in US history. The entire country is essentially shut down, including all major professional sports leagues. Interestingly, the UFC seems poised to become the first sports company to officially resume its operations.
In mid-April, the UFC planned to put on a major pay-per-view event featuring a lightweight title fight between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov. Unfortunately, Khabib ended up getting stuck in Russia due to travel restrictions and was forced to withdraw from the bout. The UFC then decided to push the entire event back a few days.
The company also decided to come up with a replacement for Khabib. Eventually, news broke that Justin Gaethje was stepping in. Gaethje and Ferguson will now fight for the interim lightweight title on May 9th in Florida.
Many are surprised to see the UFC push so hard to resume its operations. As we’ve already mentioned, every other sports league is shut down right now. Some analysts feel these leagues may not resume for the rest of the year.
UFC 249 is stacked from top to bottom. The entire fight card is expected to be fantastic. It’s also likely to be one of the most-watched MMA events ever held.
It appears the UFC is also preparing to jump back into the television industry.
Dana White Announces a New Ultimate Fighter Season is Coming
Back in the early 2000s, the UFC was nearing bankruptcy. The company had struggled to find a home on network television and was finding it very difficult to sell PPVs. In 2005, the company had a last-ditch effort to attract viewers with a reality television show called The Ultimate Fighter.
This show was broadcasted on Spike TV and proved to be an immediate success. Viewership of UFC events began to increase and PPV sales started to skyrocket. Over the years, the UFC has continued to air this show.
The last season took place in 2018. Some felt that the UFC had run its course with the television game, yet Dana White claims otherwise. The UFC president now claims that a new Ultimate Fighter season is being planned.
During a public Reddit session, White told a fan that the next season is coming soon. He didn’t elaborate, yet it’s clear the company is now interested in reviving the show.
In recent years, several different versions of The Ultimate Fighter have been tested. This includes country vs. country seasons and even ones that feature athletes from rival gyms. Historically speaking, the original style has been the most successful.
We’re likely to hear more information about this season over the next couple of months. Now, attention is turning to the event scheduled to take place next weekend.
UFC 249 is Just a Little Over a Week Away!
Sports fans have been forced to sit and wait for leagues to start operating again. Under normal circumstances, the MLB, NHL, and NBA would be in the full swing of things. That’s not the case and the UFC seems likely to be the only sports league that’s up and running.
This MMA promotion’s next show will take place in just a little over a week. Unsurprisingly, fans are not able to attend this show. It will still be broadcasted on ESPN as usual.
Some believe this is the best fight card the UFC has ever put together. Every single fight is one that could headline a show. Bovada, one of the best online sportsbooks in the US, is now offering odds for each fighter competing.
Dana White recently revealed that a new Ultimate Fighter season is being planned. That’s not the only news he broke. White also revealed that multiple MMA events will start being held every single week. This includes shows on May 13th and May 16th.
We’ll be offering more information on UFC 249 as the event draws closer. This includes a betting breakdown of each fight on the card. Make sure to stay tuned!
