The Next Major Boxing Event Could Happen Within Months

Custom Boxing Background

  • Many boxing title fights have been pushed back to later this year.
  • Several officials now believe the next major boxing fight will happen this summer.
  • The UFC is set to host its next fight card on May 9th in Florida.

It seems like every week, officials within the country’s top sports leagues discuss plans to start hosting events again. This has proven extremely difficult. Today, several officials commented on when the next major boxing event could take place.

Boxing fans have been eagerly awaiting news on when fights will resume. If all goes according to plan, we may see several important bouts taking place this summer. Today, we’re going to talk about what boxing officials have planned.

Let’s get into it!

Several Major Title Fights Have Been Rescheduled

Under normal circumstances, this is a great time of the year for the sport of boxing. As May approaches, more fights generally begin to take place. It’s also common to see a huge bout during the Cinco De Mayo weekend. Unfortunately, all major boxing events have been pushed back.

This includes several title bouts. A little over a month ago, news broke that the bout between Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin had been postponed. That same week, news broke that the Usyk-Chisora fight was being rescheduled.

The decision to postpone these bouts threw the heavyweight division into limbo. To make things worse, the blockbuster fight between Anthony Joshua and Kubrat Pulev was also postponed until sometime in summer. It’s now unclear when the next major boxing event could take place.

Everyone seems to have a different theory on when boxing shows can resume. It’s one of the few sports that can take place under the current restrictions. Most agree that boxing events will be held without fans in attendance for at least the next few months.

The one silver lining to this situation is that fans will be treated to several huge fights once things get back to normal. This week, several boxing officials gave their opinions on when we could see a pay-per-view boxing card take place.

Oscar De La Hoya and Bob Arum Discuss When the Next Major Boxing Event Will Happen

Oscar De La Hoya and Bob Arum are two of the most powerful men in boxing. Both currently operate major promotional companies and have several world-class fighters under their roster. This week, both De La Hoya and Arum commented on the future of boxing.

De La Hoya has already seen several of his cards postponed. This includes a title fight involving Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. The Golden Boy CEO told the media he expects the next major boxing event to take place within a few months.

“America needs sports right now and we’re very confident that we will be able to resume within the next few months,” he said. “Boxing is a sport that has survived wars and the most significant events we’ve lived through in recent times. Boxing has always been able to survive and I don’t expect this time to be any different. We are discussing plans to restart in July and have had conversations with the commissioners of various states including California, New York, Texas, Arizona, and Nevada.”

Bob Arum also expects cards to be held sometime this summer. He claims to be looking at Florida as a possible option. This state recently gave the green light to resume combat sporting events.

All of the top promotions in boxing will be working to host the first event back. At the moment, just about everyone agrees the sport will resume sometime this summer. Interestingly, the UFC is preparing to host an event in just a couple of weeks.

UFC 249 is Still Scheduled to Take Place on May 9th

Just about everyone wants to see live sporting events take place again. This has proved more difficult than many initially expected. The UFC has been one of the few sports leagues to actively attempt to hold events.

The company nearly held a fight card in mid-April. Eventually, UFC president Dana White revealed the event was being pushed back to May 9th. News then broke that the show would be held in Jacksonville, Florida.

This is one of the biggest events in the history of the UFC. Every single fight is one that fans are eager to see.

With less than two weeks until the card takes place, odds on UFC 249 are now being offered online. Bovada, one of the best online sportsbooks in the country, is giving some fantastic odds for every single fighter. In the main event, Tony Ferguson is listed as the -175 favorite against Justin Gaethje, who enters with odds of +145 to win.

If all goes according to plan, we’ll see the next major boxing event take place sometime this summer. Perhaps with the UFC resuming its shows, this could take place even sooner.
