Novak Djokovic Still Betting Favorite to Win 2022 U.S. Open

2022 US Open What Are The Odds

  • Novak Djokovic is still the +140 betting favorite to win the 2022 U.S. Open men’s singles tournament.
  • Djokovic’s participation in the tournament is uncertain because of his stance against getting the COVID-19 vaccine.
  • Last yer’s winner and world no. 1 Daniil Medvedev is the second favorite at +240 odds.

Novak Djokovic remains the betting favorite in the latest U.S. Open futures odds boards despite the uncertainty of his participation in the event.

According to online sportsbook BetOnline, Djokovic is the +140 favorite to win the last grand slam singles title of the year. However, his status in the event is in doubt as he has not softened his stance on receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

No Plans to Change his Stance on COVID-19 Vaccine

Shortly after winning a fourth consecutive men’s singles title at the All-England Club earlier this month, Djokovic told reporters that he has no plans to change his stance on the COVID-19 vaccine ahead of next month’s U.S. Open and that he will not be playing in the event unless the restrictions to enter the United States are eased or he is given a medical exception to play.

Djokovic won the first three grand slams in 2021 before losing to Daniil Medvedev in last year’s U.S. Open. He was barred from playing in the 2022 Australian Open earlier this year because he is unvaccinated against COVID-19 and was even deported after arriving at Melbourne airport.

He was able to play at Roland Garros but lost to Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals. Djokovic then went on to defeat Nick Kyrgios in the final at the All-England Club to win the men’s singles tournament at Wimbledon for the 4th consecutive time. Coming off a 2nd place finish in New York last year and a win at Wimbledon earlier this month, Djokovic is the obvious +140 odds on favorite to win the tournament.

Medvedev Beats Djokovic in 2021 U.S. Open Final

Second on the BetOnline odds board at +240 is world no. 1 Daniil Medvedev who denied Djokovic a Grand Slam by winning the 2021 U.S. Open Final, his first grand slam win. Medvedev lost to Nadal in 2022 Australian Open final and was eliminated in the 4th round of the 2022 French Open. He did not play at Wimbledon due to the ban on all Russian and Belarusian players imposed by the All-England Club.

22-time grand slam winner Rafael Nadal is third at +400 odds. Nadal won the first two grand slams of 2022, winning in Melbourne and Roland Garros. It looked like he and Djokovic were on a collision course again at Wimbledon but the Spaniard suffered an abdominal tear that forced him to withdraw in the semifinals.

Teen sensation Carlos Alcaraz is next at +400 odds after he went all the way to the quarterfinals at last year’s U.S. Open before losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime. On the other hand, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas are both listed at +1200 odds. Zverev lost to Djokovic in last year’s U.S. Open semifinals and was a finalist in 2020. Tsitsipas has never made it past the third round at Flushing Meadows. Auger-Aliassime (+2200), Matteo Berrettini (+2200), and Andrey Rublev(+2500) are the only players with odds shorter than +3000.
