Matt Corral Favored to Start More Games This Season than Desmond Ridder and Malik Willis

Who Will Start More Games

  • Matt Corral is favored to start more games than Desmond Ridder and Malik Willis.
  • According to  online sportsbook BetOnline, the former Ole’ Miss QB is a -150 favorite to start more games this coming season than his fellow third-round draft picks.
  • Corral will be playing behind the Sam Darnold who went 4-11 as starter last season in Carolina.

Of the three quarterbacks picked in the 3rd round of the 2022 NFL Draft, oddsmakers are predicting that Carolina’s Matt Corral will start more games during the 2022 regular season.

According to the online sportsbook BetOnline, Corral is the -150 betting favorite to start more games this season than Desmond Ridder of the Atlanta Falcons and Malik Willis of the Tennessee Titans who are listed at +140 and +300, respectively.

Panthers Select Corral 94th Overall

Corral was one of the projected top QBs in the 2022 NFL Draft and was one of only 21 players invited to Las Vegas. However, he dropped all the way down to 94th overall as the fourth quarterback selected in the draft behind Pickett ( #20), Desmond Ridder (#74), and Malik Willis (#86). Despite that, Corral may be in a better spot than his fellow rookie QBs considering he will be playing behind the inconsistent Sam Darnold.

Last March, the best NFL betting sites opened the odds for the Panthers’ Week 1 starter. Darnold opened as the betting favorite to return as Carolina’s starting QB. However, at +225 odds, that only translated to a 30.8% implied probability. Corral’s name wasn’t on the odds board back then because that was before the draft. However, the odds indicated that Darnold’s hold of the Panthers’ QB1 job isn’t firm and is probably even shaky. With only P.J. Walker and Davis Cheek as the only signal-callers in the Carolina lineup, Corral’s name will likely get called if Darnold struggles to start the season.

The Panthers traded for Darnold last year and made him their starter. He went 4-7 in 11 games as Carolina’s starter with 2,527 passing yards, 9 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. Darnold also rushed for a career-best 222 yards with 5 rushing touchdowns. However, with the Panthers missing the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season, Carolina might not have too much patience in Darnold, giving Corral a chance to start next season.

Falcons Take Ridder With 74th Pick

Meanwhile, Ridder was drafted by the Falcons after the team signed Marcus Mariotta as a free agent on March 22 following the trade of veteran Matt Ryan. Mariotta will open the offseason program as the Falcons’ starter as confirmed by head coach Arthur Smith after the draft. Smith also said Mariotta will begin as the season’s starter but said that the position will ultimately go to the best player. That could end up as Ridder.

Willis has been labeled by several quarters as the biggest steal of the 2022 NFL draft. The Liberty quarterback was the heavy -145 betting favorite to be the first quarterback selected in the draft. However, he ended up as the third signal-caller drafted. Willis will be playing behind Ryan Tannehill in the depth chart and with the Titans coming off a 12-5 season behind Tannehill, it’s unlikely Willis gets to start next season. Well unless probably if Tannehill gets hurt.

No quarterback drafted in the third round has won his team’s starting job since Russell Wilson. This year, none of the three QBs drafted in round 3 are expected to start in Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season. However, one or more of them could get an opportunity to show their wares during their freshman season.
