In their first bout, Joshua entered the ring as the three-belt champion and was the -278 betting favorite on fight night after opening at -400 odds. Usyk opened at +300 and closed at +210 odds, the longest in his professional boxing career and the first time that he closed with plus money odds. However, we knew how that one ended.

Former undisputed cruiserweight champion Usyk traveled to London last September 25, 2021, to challenge Joshua for the WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles. Despite entering the ring as a sizable betting underdog of as long as +210 on some of the top boxing betting sites, Usyk put on a masterclass boxing clinic to beat Joshua and become heavyweight champion.
Usyk outlanded Joshua 148-123 in total punches landed and was the more accurate puncher at 28% versus only 19% accuracy for Joshua. The Ukrainian also connected on more power punches at 96-71 and also had the better power punch connection rate at 44% against 33%. Usyk also outlanded Joshua in seven out of the 12 rounds in the fight, including a 41-15 punch landed advantage in the championship rounds.
The judges scored the bout 115-113, 116-112, and 117-112 in favor of Usyk in an impressive upset. Following the loss, Joshua wasted no time in exercising his rematch clause and online sportsbook Bovada quickly installed Usyk as the -225 betting favorite and Joshua the +170 bottom dog. The bout was initially set for July 23 but both parties later agreed that it would happen on August 20, 2022, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Long and Intense First Face-Off
Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua share a long and intense first face-off ahead of their rematch on Aug 20th…
— Michael Benson (@MichaelBensonn) June 21, 2022
Usyk and Joshua shared a long and intense face-off on Tuesday during the first press conference for their rematch in Saudi Arabia. AJ put on his best menacing look as he refused to break the stare to turn to the audience. But when he realized Uysk wasn’t going to do so either, Joshua turned away as if he realized that he wasn’t going to intimidate Usyk with the dagger look.
Of course, Joshua has to do better, even in the stare-downs because not only is Usyk a tough-as-nails fighter but he is also coming from a real-life war in his native Ukraine. Usyk joined the likes of the Klitschko brothers and Vasyl Lomachenko who opted to stay in their native land to fight Russian soldiers who invaded Ukraine earlier this year.
Joshua will be the betting underdog for the first time in his career. Previously, AJ’s longest opening odds were at -175 and that’s when he fought Wladimir Klitschko in 2017. Meanwhile, Usyk will be back as the betting favorite after being the underdog for the first time ever during their first meeting. Usyk won as underdog the first time out. Will Joshua be able to duplicate that feat on August 20th?
