Padres Now Fifth in World Series Odds Boards After Trade Deadline

It has been a busy week so far for the San Diego Padres who have significantly moved up in the World Series betting boards.

On Monday morning, San Diego traded for Josh Hader. Later that day,  the Padres signed Joe Musgrove to a five-year $100 million contract. On Tuesday morning, they swung the biggest trade of this year’s deadline, acquiring Washington Nationals’ superstar Juan Soto.

The Padres then ended the day with a doubleheader sweep of the Colorado Rockies, capped off by no less than a walk-off home run.

A Day Like Tuesday Could Only End One Way

Trent Grisham drilled a game-ending home run in the 9th inning, All-Star closer Josh Hader got the victory one day after being traded to San Diego, and the Padres defeated the Colorado Rockies 3-2 on Tuesday night to complete a doubleheader sweep hours after acquiring Juan Soto.

With the victories, the Padres have now won four in a row as they improve to 60-46 on the season. San Diego also increased their lead over the Philadelphia Phillies and Saint Louis Cardinals in the race for the second NL Wild Card spot to 3.5 games. Earlier Tuesday, the Padres sent prospects MacKenzie Gore, Robert Hassell III, C.J. Abrams, James Wood, and Jarlin Susana plus veteran designated hitter/ first baseman Luke Voit to the Washington Nationals for Juan Soto and Josh Bell.

In Soto, the Padres are getting a 23-year-old superstar who is already a World Series Champion, MVP runner-up, 2-time Silver Slugger, HR Derby Champion, and the youngest player in NFL history to win the batting title. By adding Soto to a team that is in the thick of the Wild Card race, the oddsmakers have acted accordingly and adjusted the World Series odds.

Updated World Series Odds After the Trade Deadline

By catching the big fish of the 2022 MLB Trade Deadline, the San Diego Padres jumped three spots in the updated 2022 World Series odds boards. From 8th favorite with odds of +2000, San Diego moved up to fifth with odds of +750 via the BetOnline App, overtaking the defending World Series champions Atlanta Braves who are at +1200, and the Toronto Blue Jays who are at +1400.

The Padres are one of five teams with odds better than +1000 to win the Commissioner’s Trophy. The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers are currently co-favorites at +350 odds. Meanwhile, the Houston Astros are third with their +500 odds and the New York Mets are 4th at +700.

San Diego also saw their World Series odds shorten from +2000 to +800 via Caesars Sportsbook. On the other hand, the FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings Sportsbook cut their odds from +2000 to +1100.

At BetMGM, San Diego went from +2500 at the All-Star Break to +1800 on Monday when they traded for Josh Hader, and +1300 early Tuesday when it was imminent that they would get Soto When the Soto trade was made official, BetMGM listed the Padres at +1000 odds. At PointsBet, San Diego was at +2200 on Monday, +1500 after the Hader trade, and +1000 after the Soto deal.
