Patrick Mahomes Eyeing a Perfect 20-0 Season

  • Patrick Mahomes says he wants to have a perfect 20-0 season.
  • Mahomes has led the Chiefs to a 43-10 record as a starter, including 16-2 last season.
  • Kansas City is the current +550 betting favorite to win Super Bowl LVI. But then of course, Tom Brady’s Bucs are right behind at +600.

Patrick Mahomes has been touted as the guy who can break Tom Brady’s records but the 25-year old Kansas City Chiefs QB isn’t thinking about any of TB 12’s record right now. Mahomes is focused on accomplishing a feat never before done in the NFL: a perfect 20-0 season.

In an interview with Bleacher Report’s Kayla Nicole this past weekend, Mahomes talked about the record he is setting his sights on:

The only record I have my eyes set on breaking, which would be new this year, is going 20-0. That’s not really a record to be broken, I guess you would say. But I think 19-0 is the record right now, so being able to go 20-0, to be the first one to do that, that would be awesome.”

Can Mahomes and the Chiefs go 20-0?

Mahomes is slightly mistaken as no team has ever had a 19-0 season in the NFL. The only team in the history of the NFL to finish with a perfect season was the 1972 Miami Dolphins who went 17-0 that year. Three other teams came close to becoming 19-0 but lost in the Super Bowl. One of those teams was the 2007 New England Patriots team led by Tom Brady.

This year will be the first NFL season to have 17 regular season games. So if Mahomes and company can make it 20-0, not only will they be the second team in league history to have a perfect season, they will be the first to win more than 18 games in a single NFL campaign. Now achieving it would be very tough but if there’s a team that could do it, it’s the Chiefs.

Kansas City had a 16-2 record last season and they are 43-10 overall since Mahomes took over as the team’s starting quarterback. With Mahomes playing under center, the Chiefs have made two Super Bowl appearances and a trip to the Conference Championship where they lost in OT. They won Super Bowl LIV in 2019 but for what it’s worth, their playoff losses in 2018 and 2020 were dealt by, well Tom Brady.

Super Bowl LVI Favorites

Despite their disappointing 31-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Tom Brady at Super Bowl LV, the Chiefs still opened as a heavy early odds on favorite to win Super Bowl LVI at the best NFL betting sites. As of the latest odds at online sportsbook BetOnline, Kansas City is a -550 to reclaim the Lombardi trophy this year. However, Tom Brady and the Bucs are not too far behind at +600.

The Chiefs have done several moves to upgrade their offensive line, hoping not to see a repeat of Super Bowl LV where Mahomes was running for his life all-game long. Kansas City’s offseason moves were on cue as the Bucs have retained all 22 starters from Super Bowl LV, making them the first champions in the salary cap era to bring back all starters from the previous Super Bowl.

No team has won back to back Super Bowls since the 2003 and 2004 seasons and that’s a piece of history that is going for Mahomes and the Chiefs this season. However, the last team to achieve the feat was the New England Patriots who were led by well, Tom Brady. Mahomes will not face Brady during the regular season but if the stars align, they could face each other a fourth time in the playoffs at Super Bowl LVI.
