- Sources have confirmed that Paulo Costa is challenging Marvin Vettori to a fight later this year.
Paulo “Borrachinha” Costa has not fought in the Octagon since his TKO loss to Israel Adesanya in September of 2020. Fans have been left wondering what is next for the former middleweight number-one contender. It now appears that Paulo Costa is challenging Marvin Vettori to be his next opponent.
Both of these men have fallen short against the champion. Both want to earn another crack at the world title, as well. Now is a great time to talk about what might lead to them facing off later this year.
Let’s get into it!
Israel Adesanya Remains the King at 185 Pounds
The UFC’s middleweight division has been loaded with talent for many years. There was a time when Anderson Silva ruled this weight class with an iron fist. The belt changed hands a few times after his first title loss and is now in the hands of New Zealand-based striker, Israel Adesanya.
Adesanya won the undisputed world title back in October of 2019. He has since gone 3-0 in title defenses against some of the toughest fighters at 185 pounds. There is no doubt that he is one of the very best fighters competing in the UFC today.
Most recently, Israel stepped into the Octagon in a rematch with Marvin Vettori. Many online sports betting sites had the odds for this bout closer than the champion’s past opponents. Some felt Marvin’s size and grappling would give Adesanya trouble in the cage.
That didn’t prove to be the case. Adesanya controlled the vast majority of this bout using his expert kickboxing. He also managed to avoid nearly all of Marvin’s takedowns and even managed to control the majority of the grappling exchanges with the Italian powerhouse.
There is no doubt that Adesanya remains the king at 185 pounds. He is now set for another rematch against Robert Whittaker at some point later this year. These two men have a long history and just about everyone is excited to see how their second fight plays out.
All of the contenders at middleweight are now doing what they can to earn a shot at the belt. Here’s an update on what might be next for Paulo Costa and Marvin Vettori.
Sources Claim Paulo Costa is Challenging Marvin Vettori Next
There was a time when Paulo Costa was thought to be one of the scariest fighters on the UFC’s roster. Much of the mystique around him has faded in recent months, though. That is due largely to his performance against Israel Adesanya last year and subsequent post-fight comments.
There was some real heat leading into the fight between Israel and Paulo. In the cage, however, Costa had almost nothing to offer for the champion. He was finished in the second round via TKO and blamed a long night of drinking wine before fight night as the reason for his loss.
Costa has remained on the sidelines since that loss. This week, news broke that Paulo Costa is challenging Marvin Vettori as his next opponent. ESPN’s Brett Okamoto confirmed this on his Twitter account. You can check out his Tweet about this situation below.
Asked MMA manager Wallid Ismail (@WallidJfc) for an update on Paulo Costa (@BorrachinhaMMA). He said the fight he wants to make and is pushing UFC for is Marvin Vettori (@MarvinVettori). Both talk trash, fun matchup. Wallid is trying to make it from his end.

This is a matchup that makes sense right now. Marvin Vettori is also coming off a loss to the champion in his most recent fight. He is still young, however, and is likely hungry to earn another shot at a championship at some point in the future.
It’s unclear if this is a fight that Vettori would be interested in. He may want to take a somewhat safer fight to rebound after his most recent loss. The UFC may feel differently, though. It’s not common for former title challengers to get any easy fights in the promotion.
As mentioned above, Robert Whittaker remains the number-one contender in the UFC’s middleweight division. Let’s look at the odds for this upcoming bout!
There is Still Time to Bet on Adesanya vs. Whittaker 2 Online
Very few fighters have accomplished what Israel Adesanya has managed to accomplish in such a short amount of time. He has already defended his title three times and is working his way back to the top of the pound-for-pound rankings.
Adesanya’s lone attempt to move up in weight did not go as planned. He is still the best middleweight on the planet, however, and is now set to rematch Robert Whittaker at some point this year. A huge number of fans are now flocking to BetOnline to make their early bets on how this fight may play out.
The champion is currently listed as the -200 favorite in this fight. He scored a second-round knockout over Whittaker in their first bout two years ago. He seems to have improved since then and some believe he will do the same in this rematch.
Robert Whittaker has done nothing but win since his loss to Israel. He has defeated three of the top contenders at middleweight and looked incredible doing so. In this fight, he is listed as the +170 underdog to reclaim his world title.
There is a lot happening in the middleweight division. Fans are likely to be treated to several contender fights at 185 pounds over the next few months. Stay tuned for updates!
