The Philadelphia Phillies opened their season series against the NL East division rivals New York Mets on Monday with a stunning come-from-behind win in front of 22,317 fans at the Citizens Bank Park.

Phillies Were +2500 in Live Odds Market

The Phillies opened the game as -138 betting home favorites at the best MLB sportsbooks. Philadelphia had also won five out of their last seven home games against the Mets and six out of their last seven head-to-head meetings overall. But New York opened the game looking too good to pull off the betting upset.

Pete Alonso opened the scoring with an RBI groundout then Eduardo Escobar made it 2-0 with a single to right. Mark Canha then continued his red hot start with a run-scoring single off Phillies’ starter Ranger Suarez for a 3-0 lead in the first inning. No team scored until the 7th when Francisco Lindor added an RBI single to make it a 4-0 lead. At that point, the Phillies were a -2500 in the live betting market. Then it happened.

Alec Bohm went from first to third base on Johan Camargo’s pinch-hit single to right. Bohm then scored on Kyle Schwarber’s fielder’s choice to cut the lead to 4-1. Then T.J. Realmuto hit his first home run of the season, a bomb deep into the left-field seats, to make it 4-3. Rhys Hoskins next ripped a game-tying double to left off Seth Lugo and Didi Gregorius followed with his own double, lining the ball into the right-center gap for the 5-4 lead.

Call it a Comeback

It’s still very early in the season but it was a big win for the Phillies. Philadelphia had lost 54 straight games when trailing by 4+ runs in the 8th inning or later. The last time they won under such circumstances was in August 2019 when they trailed 5-0 against the Cubs and won 7-5 on a walk-off grand slam by Bryce Harper. It was also the first time in 35 years that the Phillies have beaten the Mets after trailing by four runs in the 8th inning or later.

The NL East rivalry is just warming up. The Phillies play the Mets 12 more times before the end of May, including two more in the current set. Zach Wheeler will start opposite Tylor Megill on Tuesday night with the Phillies listed as -137 Moneyline favorites at the BetOnline App. Wheeler did not make a start in spring training with soreness in his shoulder.

Philadelphia has the third shortest odds to win the competitive NL East this season. The current World Series champions Atlanta Braves are currently the +125 betting favorites to top the division with the Mets as second favorites at +200. The Phillies are not far behind at +235. Philly has the second-most NL East wins ever with 11 but they have not won the division since 2011, which was also the last time they made the playoffs.
