  • Boston hammered Gerritt Cole and picked up a 6-2 win at Fenway Park on Tuesday night to advance to the ALDS against the Tampa Bay Rays.
  • The Red Sox are a +149 underdog in Game 1 and a +160 to beat the Rays in the series.

The Boston Red Sox are surging in the World Series odds boards following their Wild Card game win over the New York Yankees on Tuesday.

Boston was a +5000 to win on opening day and a +1400 before the Wild Card round but is now a +800 to win it all at BetMGM. The Red Sox also started Tuesday at +1600 at DraftKings but moved to +700 after winning the game.

They now have the third-best odds to win the World Series, with only the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Houston Astros having shorter odds than them.

Red Sox Defeat the Yankees

Tuesday night was no ordinary wild card game. It was another chapter in the storied rivalry between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. New York opened as a -115 betting favorite at BetMGM to beat the Red Sox at Fenway Park, shortened to -125 on Tuesday morning, and were -140 odds on favorite before the opening pitch. The Yankees were also the most popular bet with 55% of the tickets and 84% of the total betting handle. But the Red Sox had other plans.

Boston raced to a 3-0 lead and hanged on for a 6-2 win to advance to the AL Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Xander Bogaerts and Kyle Schwarber homered off Yankees ace Gerrit Cole while Boston’s Nathan Eovaldi held the Yankees scoreless entering the 6th inning. Bogaerts also cut down Aaron Judge at the plate in a crucial play in the sixth inning.

This was the 5th playoff matchup between the rivals and Boston now has a 3-2 edge. The five postseason meetings do not include the 1978 East tiebreaker, which was considered a regular season game. Yankees’ current manager Aaron Boone hit a walk-off homer in the 11th inning of Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS. That was the last time that the Yankees beat the Red Sox in the postseason.

Dodgers are Still Favorites

Before Wednesday’s Wild Card game, the Dodgers were still the +390 betting favorites to repeat as World Series champions at DraftKings. The Houston Astros were a close second at +450 while the Red Sox have moved up to +700 and are tied with the Chicago White Sox, San Francisco Giants, and Tampa Bay Rays. The Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves, and Arizona Cardinals complete the cast at +750, +1100, and +2500.

At FanDuel, the Red Sox odds have also shortened to +850 although, at this online sportsbook, six teams have shorter odds to win the World Series than them: Los Angeles (+390), Houston (+450), Tampa Bay (+500), San Francisco (+550), Chicago (+700), and Milwaukee (+800). Boston’s odds are also currently at +850 at Caesars Sportsbook, Borgata Online, and PointsBet.

But that may be looking too far ahead. The Red Sox are still dead-last at BetOnline to win the AL Pennant at +350. They are +160 underdogs in their AL Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays and are the +149 betting underdogs in Game 1 of that series in Tampa Bay.
