Rubio’s trade took place as the Cavs were preparing to pick 3rd overall in Thursday’s draft. Cleveland picked USC big man Evan Mobley and reports are saying that the Cavs love the idea of playing him alongside Jarrett Allen. With a pass-first point guard in Ricky Rubio joining them, that could lead to tons of alley-oop catches for both big men..
Last season, Minnesota Timberwolves top pick Anthony Edwards credited Rubio for helping him adjust to the pro game and called the Spanish point guard the best leader he’s played with. We saw how Edwards finished the 2020-21 season. If Rubio can be that to Mobley in Cleveland this season, then perhaps we should expect big things from the Cavs’ new big man.
The 30-year old Rubio is coming off a disappointing 2020-21 season in Minnesota where he averaged only 8.6 points and 6.4 assists per game. But if you look at how Rubio has played for Spain after two games in the Tokyo Olympics, he looks ready to bounce back next season.
Rubio scored 22 points and issued 9 assists in Spain’s opening game win against host Japan. Then he scored a personal best ( in FIBA competition) 26 points while making 5-6 three-pointers in a victory over Argentina.

The Cavs have a young and dynamic backcourt duo in Collin Sexton and Darius Garland Having Rubio play behind them is such a big bonus as the Cavs did not have a back-up point guard last season due to Dellvedova’s injury. Aside from contributing stats to the Cleveland backcourt, Rubio will also be an excellent mentor to their two young gurats.
However, there are rumors that Sexton could be on the move this season. The 22-year old guard is eligible for a maximum five-year $168M contract which the Cavs are reportedly not willing to pay. Having Rubio is also a buffer, a good one at that, in case Sexton leaves.
A starting backcourt of Rubio and Darius Garland looks to be a perfect match. While Garland is the fast, athletic, and scoring guard, Rubio can be the half-court orchestrator who can knock down the three, or set up the half court game.
The best NBA betting sites have the Cavs with one of the worst odds to win the 2022 NBA Championship and it’s hard to imagine this team winning it all next season. But with a core that is composed of Jarrett Allen, Evan Mobley, Collin Sexton, and Darius Garland plus veterans like Kevin Love and Rubio, this team should be a tough out for anybody in the league.
