- Robbie Ray is now the -130 odds on favorite to win the AL Cy Young Award.
- Yankees’ ace Gerritt Cole continues to fade and now has dropped to -105 in the latest BetOnline odds boards.
- The Toronto Blue Jays have also overtaken the New York Yankees for the second wild card spot in the American League.
The AL wild card race is getting tighter by the day.
After their 6-2 win over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday and the Yankees’ 11-3 defeat against Cleveland the same day, the Toronto Blue Jays have grabbed the temporary upper hand again in the race for the second wild card spot in the AL:

But it’s not just the wild card race or Robbie Ray’s pants that are tight, so are the American League Cy Young odds boards.

Ray has been in the prowl as of late, especially when we talk about betting odds. Cole reclaimed the lead in the odds boards from Lance Lyn in late August and solidified his claim with a 15-strikeout performance against the Angels earlier this month. But after the Yankees’ ace got to as short at -350, he left a game against the Toronto Blue Jays with tightness in his left hamstring. The following day, the AL Cy Young odds boards got more interesting with Cole’s odds fading to -115 at the best baseball betting sites.
While Cole had his troubles, Ray continued his impressive run. The Blue Jays’ left-hander opened the current month by pitching 6.2 scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts in an 8-0 win over the A’s. After a rough second outing where he allowed two home runs, Ray bounced back big time in his last start.
The 29-year old allowed only one run on four hits with 10 strikeouts in a 6-3 win over the third-best team in the majors and the no. 1 team in the AL in the Tampa Bay Rays. But more than beating the Rays, the Blue Jays kept pace with the Yankees in the race for the 2nd wild card spot in the AL. Two games later, the Blue Jays have temporarily overtaken the Yankees. Similarly, Ray has supplanted Cole on top of the betting boards.

The AL Cy Young race is far from over but if you look at the latest odds at the BetOnline App, it is down to a two-man race between Ray (-130) and Cole (+105) with the next closest name on the odds board being Lance Lyn at +950. Carlos Rodon, the only other pitcher whom the oddsmakers still think has a chance of stealing the award is too far back at +2500.
But not only has Ray taken the top spot in the AL Cy Young betting boards, but he is also now listed at minus money. And although Cole is just a stone’s throw away at +105, and the two are still both listed at -110 at FanDuel’s latest listing. However, Ray is pitching at a ridiculous pace right now.
Since July 28th when the Blue Jays were just two games above the .500 mark, Ray has posted an ERA of 1.80 and a WHIP of .938 with a .193 BAA and 12.6 K/9. He has a record of 4-0 during that span and the Blue Jays are 18 games over the .500 mark after Saturday’s games. And yes, as we said earlier, they have temporarily overtaken the Yankees for the final ticket to the postseason.
