Boston Celtics big man Robert Williams III is the odds-on favorite to win the 2023 NBA Defensive Player of the Year award.

According to online sportsbook BetOnline, Boston’s Time Lord is the +600 favorite to be named as next season’s top defender, opening at shorter odds than three-time winner Rudy Gobert of the Minnesota Timberwolves who is chasing him at +650 odds.

Could Time Lord Win DPOY?

Williams emerged as one of the league’s top rim protectors after a healthier 2021-22 season where he played and started 61 games and saw 10 more minutes of playing time per contest. Time Lord ranked 4th overall with 2.2 blocks per game while also finishing 20th in rebounding at 9.6 boards grabbed per contest.

In the playoffs, Williams ranked third behind Jaren Jackson Jr.’s 2.5 blocks per game and Nicolas Claxton’s 2.2 blocks per game at 2.3 per contest. However, he amassed more blocks than anybody else during the 2022 NBA Playoffs with 38, seven more than teammate Al Horford who was second and who played in seven more games than Williams.

With Williams having his best and healthiest season in the NBA, the Celtics turned from a below .500 team to the 2nd seed in the Eastern Conference. They eliminated the Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, and Miami Heat in the East playoffs and even took a 2-1 series lead in the 2022 NBA Finals before losing to the Golden State Warriors. With Boston currently favorites to win it all next season, Williams is expected to play a big role again.

Jazz Trade Gobert to Timberwolves

Gobert opens with the second-best odds to win the award for the 4th time in his career. The Stifle Tower has won the DPOY award three times in the last five years, including back-to-back during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. The Frenchman has been named to six All-Defensive First teams and led the NBA in rebounds last season.

Last season, Gobert finished third in the voting but will enter the upcoming campaign playing for a new team after he was traded by the Utah Jazz. In Minnesota, Gobert will have to share the frontcourt with Karl Anthony Towns. Although Towns and Gobert play differently, KAT’s sheer size will force Gobert to share the rim protection duties with him.

Miami’s Bam Adebayo is third at +800 odds while Golden State’s Draymond Green and last year’s winner Marcus Smart are priced at +900. Smart and Williams III are the only teammates in the Top 5. Meanwhile, 2021 winner Giannis Antetokounmpo is next at +1000 while Jackson and Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid complete the early list at +1200 and +1400, respectively.
