May 2022 PGA Championship Golf Background

  • Scottie Scheffler is the +1200 betting favorite to win the PGA Championship next month.
  • The world no. 1 has won four out of his last six tournaments, including the Masters in Augusta earlier this month.
  • Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, and Collin Morikawa are next at +1400.

World no. 1 and recently crowned Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is the early +1200 odds on favorite to win the 2022 PGA Championship which is set to take place next month at the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Scheffler opened as co-favorites with Jon Rahm and Collin Morikawa earlier last week but in the days after his Masters’ triumph, Scheffler has emerged as the solo odds on favorite to win his second major.

Scheffler Has Won Four of the Last Six Tournaments

Two months ago, Scheffler had not won a single tournament on the PGA Tour. Since then, he’s played six and has won four, including the Masters while ascending to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings. While Scheffler’s meteoric rise only began this year, you can argue that it was at this tournament in 2020 when he began showing flashes of brilliance.

At TPC Harding Park just outside San Francisco two years ago, Scheffler was upended by another up-and-coming star of the game in Collin Morikawa. Scheffler eventually finished 4th in the tournament. Last year, Scheffler was a T-8 at this tournament which was held at Ocean Course.

The difference this year is that Scheffler has called Southern Hills his “favorite course” in the world. Scheffler played college golf in the state of Texas and was known to take trips north to Oklahoma to play in the major championship venue. Having said that, his familiarity with the golf course and his torrid winning streak makes him a worthy betting favorite.

Jon Rahm T27 at the Masters

Jon Rahm, who sits behind Scheffler +1400 at the BetOnline App, finished T27 at the Masters and looks to have fallen the pace a bit after a hot start to the year. However, he the former world no. 1 has five Top 10s in his last six starts in a major championship and Southern Hills should be a golf course that favors big hitters like Rahm.

Also at +1400 is Rory McIlroy who is coming off a final-round 64 at the Masters which propelled him to finish second in the tournament. He’s won four majors, including the PGA twice in 2012 and 2014. 2017 PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas is also coming off a strong performance at the Masters where he was a T8. He is also listed at +1400 as is Collin Morikawa who won this tournament in 2020 and finished 5th in Augusta.

Cameron Smith who has two wins this year at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and THE PLAYERS Championship is listed at +160 . Meanwhile, Dustin Johnson and Viktor Hovland are both listed at +1800 while Brooks Koepka is pegged at +2000 and Patrick Cantlay at +2200. Jordan Spieth and Xander Schaufelle are both priced at +2800 and Hideki Matsuyama is at +3300. Other prominent names with longer odds are Joaquin Niemann and Tiger Woods at +4000 plus Bryson DeChambeau, Tony Finau, and Louis Oosthuizen at +5000.
