While the opening odds were lopsided, Stevenson took to Twitter to defend his opponent:
Robson is a solid fighter he’s a Olympic gold medalist and arguably beat Valdez before me so he deserve a shot at these belts before anyone.. Oh yeah u other fighters try fighting each other and win it’ll get more eyes on u and put u in position to face the champ 🤷🏾♂️

Oscar Valdez Edged Robson Conceicao in Controversial Decision

Conceicao opened as the +600 underdog and closed at +900 against Oscar Valdez in his most recent bout. However, Conceicao appeared to outbox Valdez in their 12-round WBC featherweight title fight even with that bogus one-point deduction for allegedly punching Valdez behind the head in the 8th round.
The Brazilian out-landed Valdez 141 to 83 in total punches landed. Conceicao also threw 576 punches in the fight whereas the Mexican-American had a total of only 390 punches thrown. Conceicao also landed 103 power punches with a 35% accuracy while Valdez only connected on 64 power punches at a 31% connect rate. He also outlanded Valdez in total punches during 11 out of the 12 rounds in the fight. Despite delivering the obviously better output, the judges gave the nod to Valdez.
Conceicao will be the betting underdog for only the 3rd time in his professional boxing career. He opened at +137 odds and closed at +125 during his unanimous decision win against Xavier Martinez last January 22nd. He will however be facing his longest odds against Stevenson.

Stevenson became the first fighter since Marco Antonio Barrera in 2005 to unify boxing’s junior lightweight titles after he defeated Oscar Valdez via unanimous decision last April 30, 2022, at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The 25-year-old southpaw from Newark, New Jersey is also an Olympian like Conceicao. But while the Brazilian won gold in 2016, Stevenson lost to Cuba’s Robeisy Ramirez in the gold medal match. Shakur knocked out Jamel Herring in 2021 to win the WBO super featherweight title, before annexing the WBC and Ring belts by beating Valdez.
Stevenson has never been the betting underdog in any boxing bout. He was coming off back-to-back fights where he opened at odds longer than +1000. Shakur opened at -350 odds against Herring and was a mere -136 when he opened against Valdez. Stevenson has not closed at odds longer than the -400 he closed with when he fought Valdez.
