Sportsbooks Picking Wonderboy Over Belal Muhammad at UFC Fight Night 199

Belal Muhammad And Stephen Thompson UFC

  • Stephen Thompson has been listed as the -250 betting favorite against Belal Muhammad.
  • Thompson and Muhammad will fight at the UFC Fight Night event on December 18th.
  • Wonderboy is coming off a loss to Gilbert Burns while Muhammad is fresh from the biggest win of his UFC carer against Demian Maia.

Stephen Thompson has opened as the betting favorite against Belal Muhammad.

The best UFC sportsbooks opened the betting lines for the Top 10 welterweight battle on Monday night and Wonderboy has been listed as the -250 betting favorite and Muhammad the +210 underdog.

Thompson and Muhammad will meet in a 170-pound contest that will happen on the final UFC Fight Night event of the year on December 18th in Las Vegas. That event will be headlined by a heavyweight contest featuring Derrick Lewis and Chris Daukaus.

Burns Outwrestles Thompson

Thompson is looking to get back on track after suffering a unanimous decision loss to Gilbert Burns at UFC 264 last July. In that bout, Burns was heavily criticized by many, including UFC President Dana White for his performance. But Durinho did the right thing against Wonderboy, choosing to wrestle him on the mat rather than test his striking.

The loss snapped a two-fight winning streak for Thompson. Wonderboy had won back-to-back fights against Geoff Neal and Vicente Luque. Despite the setback, he is still the UFC’s no. 5 ranked welterweight contender and one of the top fighters that current champion Kamaru Usman has yet to fight.

Thompson challenged for the UFC welterweight title twice in 2017. He figured in a majority draw with Tyron Woodley at UFC 205 and lost a close majority decision to Woodley in their rematch at UFC 209.

Wonderboy has always been the darling of the sportsbooks. In 17 UFC bouts, he has closed as betting underdog only once, and that was when he fought Johny Hendricks as a +250 bottom dog in 2016. That also means that Thompson has been upset five times, including as the -180 chalk against Burns the last time out.

Muhammad Defeats Maia

Muhammad meanwhile, will be trying to close out 2021 with another victory. The 33-year old is 2-0-1 this year including the biggest win of his career against Demian Maia in his most recent outing at UFC 263 last June 12th.

Prior to that, Muhammad had a high-profile matchup against Leon Edwards but that bout ended in a no-contest after an accidental eye poke. ‘Say My Name’ opened 2021 with a unanimous decision win over Dhiego Lima at UFC 258.

This marks the 4th time in his last seven bouts where Muhammad has opened as the betting underdog. However, Muhammad closed with the plus money sign next to his name only once in his last six fights and that was when he entered UFC Vegas 21 as a +240 against Edwards.

A former Titan FC welterweight champion, Muhammad is still looking for his first-ever title shot. At no. 9 in the current UFC rankings and without a defeat in his last six bouts, he will have an opportunity to move up the rankings if he beats Wonderboy next month.
