Teofimo Lopez Heavy Betting Favorite in Junior Welterweight Debut

  • Teofimo Lopez has opened as the massive -2000 favorite to beat Pedro Campa in his light welterweight debut.
  • The fight is Lopez’s first since he was upset by George Kambosos when they fought for the unified lightweight titles in November 2021.
  • Lopez’s opening odds are the fifth-shortest of his professional boxing career.

Teofimo Lopez has opened as a massive betting favorite in his comeback fight against veteran Mexican fighter Pedro Campa. According to the top boxing betting sites, Lopez is a huge -2000 to win the fight while Campa is the heavy +750 betting favorite.

Lopez and Campa have agreed to fight in a Showtime Sports event on August 13th. The event is likely to take place in South Florida.

Major Upset

Lopez will be returning to the ring for the first time since he was upset by George Kambosos last November in what was ESPN’s Boxing Upset of the Year. In that bout, Lopez closed as a massive favorite in the -1250 to -800 range but was outworked and outpointed by Kambosos via a split decision.

The loss was the first of Lopez’s professional boxing career and it came immediately after he delivered the best performance of his life. One fight earlier, Lopez upset Vasyl Lomachenko as the +300 underdog to add the WBA (super), WBO, and Ring lightweight belts to his IBF lightweight championship. Those belts are now gone.

Since the Kambosos setback, Lopez has dealt with a litany of health issues. He was hospitalized due to “extensive air in the retropharyngeal space” likely due to a tear in his esophagus suffered in the Kambosos bout. Lopez also underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow last February and arthroscopic surgery on his right hand last March. Now that he’s healthy, Lopez says it is time for the take back.

Time for the Take Back

Lopez isn’t just coming back on August 13th. He will be doing so at a new weight class. Teofimo will be moving up from 135 pounds to 140 for his next bout. However, as the opening odds indicate, Lopez is not expected to face too much resistance from his Mexican opponent.

Teofimo’s opening odds against Campa are the fifth-shortest of his boxing career and the shortest since he opened with the same +2500 odds against Edis Tatli in 2019. Lopez has been an underdog only once in his career and that was when he closed at +310 odds against Vasyl Lomachenko. Campa has never been the betting underdog before, albeit against unknown opposition.

The 30-year-old Campa has an impressive record of 33-1-1 with 22 knockouts as a professional. Campa is unbeaten in his last eight bouts with one draw, and four stoppages during that stretch. However, he has not fought outside Mexico and has not faced an opponent at the same level as Lopez.
