UFC Betting Sites Picking Raquel Pennington Over Julia Avila

Tom Brady Buccaneers Super Bowl Trophy

  • Raquel Pennington has opened as the -150 betting favorite against Julia Avila at UFC Fight Night 199.
  • At +130, Avila will be the underdog for the fist time in five UFC appearances.
  • For Pennington, this is only the third time in her last eight bouts where she has opened as betting favorite.

Sportsbooks are favoring Raquel Pennington to beat Julia Avila in their December 18th bout.

Pennington and Avila have been penciled to meet in the undercard of UFC Fight Night 199 on s and December 18th at the UFC’s APEX Facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will be headlined by a heavyweight showdown between Derrick Lewis and Chis Daukaus.

Pennington Defeats Kianzad

Penington defeated Pannie Kianzad via unanimous decision in her most recent UFC appearance. The win was her first after a 15-month hiatus which saw her serve a six-month USADA suspension after self-reporting that she ingested a banned substance. Prior to that break, she went 2-3 with losses to former or current UFC champions in Amanda Nunes, Germaine de Randamie, and Holly Holm.

This will mark only the third time in Pennington’s last eight bouts where she has seen the minus money odds next to her name. Pennington was the betting underdog in five straight bouts, including her losses to Nunes, de Randamie, and Holm. She was the +120 bottom dog at UFC 205 when she sent Miesha Tate to retirement. Pennington was also the +125 underdog when she defeated current no. 4 bantamweight Irene Aldana in July 2019.

The 33-year old from Colorado Springs, Colorado is currently the no. 9 ranked female bantamweight in the UFC. Pennington challenged Amanda Nunes for the belt at UFC 224 but suffered a fifth-round TKO loss. At no. 9 in the latest UFC women’s bantamweight rankings, Pennington is looking for one more run at the title. She cannot afford a slip-up here.

Avila Chokes out Stoliarenko

Avila is also coming off a win as she choked out Julija Stoliarenko in her last outing at UFC Vegas 30 last June 26th. The 33-year old Avila won her first two UFC bouts against Pannie Kianzad and Gina Mazany but lost to SIjara Eubanks at UFC Vegas 10 last September 12, 2020, before improving to 3-1 under the UFC with the win over Stoliarenko.

She opened her MMA career with a win over Marion Reneau and also owns a win over inaugural UFC women’s flyweight queen Nicco Montano whom she defeated at HD MMA in 2017 to win the HD MMA women’s bantamweight championship. Avila also fought under TWC, XKO, and Invicta FC before joining the UFC in 2019.

The best UFC sportsbooks have favored Avila in her previous four bouts. She was a -250 against Kianzad, -700 against Mazany, and a -300 betting favorite when she was beaten by Eubanks. In her most recent bout against Stoliarenko, Avila opened as the -400 betting favorite before closing at a longer -380.
