Valentina Shevchenko defeats Lauren Murphy via TKO to retain her women’s flyweight title
— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) September 26, 2021
Valentina is the undisputed women’s champion at flyweight. The 34-year old Russian-Peruvian fighter s the first and current UFC women’s flyweight champion. She has the longest current reign among all UFC champions, male or female, with six consecutive title defenses. Shevchenko is undefeated and literally unscathed at 125 pounds.
“Bullet” is the no. 1 ranked women’s pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC. A former Muay Thai and Kickboxing world champion, Schevchenko is 8-0 at flyweight and 9-2 overall in the UFC. Her two losses have come against Amanda Nunes, including a disputed split decision bout for the UFC women’s bantamweight title at UFC 215. In her last bout, Shevchenko mauled Lauren Murphy at UFC 266 to retain her title and improve her record to 22-3 with 8 knockouts and seven submission victories.
Shevchenko also opened at -600 when she fought Liz Carmouche at UFC on ESPN +14 in 2019 and Katlyn Chookagian at UFC 247 the following year. She won both fights easily, stopping Chookagian in three rounds and blanking Carmouche on the scorecards for a unanimous decision win. Since moving down to flyweight in 2018, Bullet has never been a betting underdog and has never closed at odds shorter than -300.
Taila Santos Taps Out Joanne Wood at UFC Vegas 43
— MMAFighting.com (@MMAFighting) November 21, 2021
Meanwhile, Taila Santos tapped out Joanne Wood ( formerly Calderwood ) at UFC Vegas 43 to move up to no. 4 in the UFC women’s flyweight rankings. With the current champion already beating the fighters currently holding the Top 3 contender sports at women’s flyweight, Santos was anointed as Shevchenko’s next challenger in only her sixth UFC bout.
Santos joined the UFC via the Contender Series Brazil show in 2018 where she defeated Estefani Almeida. She opened her UFC career with a split decision loss to Mara Romero Borella at UFC Fight Night 144 in February 2018. But since then, she’s picked up four consecutive wins, defeating Molly McCann, Gillian Robertson, Roxanne Modafferi, and Wood. The former Aspera Fighting Championship bantamweight champion has a record of 19-1 with 10 knockouts and three submission wins.
This marks only the second time in Santos’ UFC career that she’s seen the plus money sign written next to her name and her longest odds since joining the promotion. The only other time where the 28-year old Brazilian has been the underdog in the UFC was when she opened at +250 and closed at +180 against McCann in July 2020.
