Verstappen Wins at Hungaroring After Starting from P10 with +800 Odds

Verstappen Wins Hungarian GP

  • Max Verstappen won the 2022 Aramco Hungarian Grand Prix after starting from P10 and with odds of +800.
  • Lewis Hamilton finished P2 after starting from P7, cashing a +250 for a podium finish and +750 to register the fastest lap.
  • Charles Leclerc entered the race as the 5/4 betting favorite to win but ended up in 6th place due to poor team strategy.

Max Verstappen winning a Grand Prix isn’t surprising, given his success this season. Verstappen winning from P10 though is pretty impressive.

The reigning world champion rallied from the 10th spot and starting odds of +800 to win the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday, further extending his championship lead, and widening the gap between him and his closest pursuers in the latest F-1 odds boards.

Verstappen started in 10th Place

Verstappen won his 8th race of the season and extended his championship lead over Charles Leclerc to a commanding 80 points in an action-packed 2022 Aramco Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring on Sunday in Budapest, Hungary.

Mercedes’ George Russell won his first-ever pole position but it was Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez who entered the race as the top two betting favorites at 5/4 and 3/1 odds, respectively. Russell was just third at 10/3 odds while Verstappen came in 4th with his 8/1 odds.

Leclerc looked like he had a good path to victory until Ferrari switched him to the hard compound tyre on his second pit stop. The move proved disastrous as every driver who used the tyre struggled in the race. The Ferrari ace switched back to soft tyres on a third pit stop on lap 54 but by then, the damage had been done. Carlos Sainz finished 4th for Ferrari while Leclerc ended up in 6th place, leaving Ferrari’s title aspirations in tatters.

Five Straight Podiums for Lewis Hamilton

While Ferrari’s struggles continued, Mercedes continued its rise in the Constructors standings by sending its two drivers to the podium for the second straight race. The Silver Arrows now have a total of 304 championship points which is only 30 points fewer than second place Ferrari in the Constructors Standings.

Lewis Hamilton also drove brilliantly on Sunday, finishing in second place after starting from P7. The seven-time world champion has now finished on the podium in five consecutive races. With 84 points in the last five rounds of the championship, Hamilton has earned more championship points than anybody not named Verstappen during that span. Hamilton was a 14/1 to win the race and came within 7 plus seconds of doing so. The Briton however cashed as the +250 to finish on the podium and as the +1600 underdog to register the fastest lap.

Despite that, Hamilton is still lagging in the Drivers Standings with 146 points, five places behind Verstappen but now just 12 points off teammate Russell who has 158 in 4th place. Russell has finished on the podium in back-to-back races for the first time in his career. He now has five 3rd place finishes in the last 11 races.
