According to the Heat, Oladipo will have surgery on Thursday in New York. Miami hast not set a timetable for his recovery and return to play. Oladipo has not played since injuring his right knee during the team’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers last April 8th.
Same Quad He Tore in 2019
Victor Oladipo is having surgery on his right quad tendon — the same one he ruptured in Jan. 2019. This time, it’s being done in NYC.
He visited a specialist there last month.

Oladipo’s current injury is on the same quad he tore in 2019 when he was still with the Indiana Pacers. The injury was considered a rare one and required intensive recovery. Because of that, Oladipo missed a full calendar year spanning the 2019 and 2020 seasons before returning in January 2020.
Since his return, he has played in just a total of 52 regular season games. 28 of those were with the Pacers who traded him for Caris Levert in the James Harden deal. He played a total of 20 games for the Houston Rockets who dealt him to the Miami Heat at the trade deadline for Kelly Olynyk and Avery Bradley.
Since arriving in Miami, Oladipo has played in only four total games. Miami had hoped that Oladipo would help them go on another deep playoff run, and perhaps win it all this season. However, Miami will now have to do it with their old reliables in Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo.
The Heat are currently tied with the Knicks for 5th place in the Eastern Conference. Miami was the East’s 5th seed last season when they upset playoff top seed Milwaukee in the second round of the playoffs and the 2nd seeded Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals. The injury hit Heat lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2020 NBA Finals.

The 29-year old Oladipo emerged as an All-NBA player when he was with the Pacers. He won Most Improved Player honors in 2018 after a breakout year. That season, he also earned his first All-Star selection and was also named to the All-Defensive First Team and All-NBA Third Team. However, tragedy struck the following season when he ruptured the quad tendon on his right knee.
He has struggled to find his shot since his initial return and this season, he averaged 19.3 points in a total of 33 games but shot only 40.8% from the floor. Oladipo will be a free agent at the end of the season after turning down a $45M extension from the Rockets, which led to his trade.
Oladipo was expected to get a max contract in free agency, despite his bumpy road to recovery. However, this latest development will change the entire picture. Returning from his first injury was one of the most difficult comebacks we’ve seen in years, and one can only hope that he will have the same mental fortitude to do it all over again. Prayers up for Victor Oladipo.
