Volkanovski closed at +165 odds during their first bout and went as high as a -250 favorite in the rematch. When the third bout was first booked, Voklanovski opened as the -150 favorite and Holloway the +130 betting underdog. That bout did not push through as Holloway suffered an injury during training. Volkanovski went on to beat the Korean Zombie in a one-side beating at UFC 273 last month. The betting lines for the third fight reopened on Thursday after it was announced that it would take place at UFC 276.

MMA writer Ariel Helwani was the first to report on Wednesday night that Volkanovski and Holloway have agreed to a third fight. Quoting multiple people with knowledge of the promotion’s plans, Helwani initially reported that the fighters have agreed to fight in July, with the international fight weekend on July 2 as the primary target and UFC 277 on July 30 as the second option. Late Wednesday night, Helwani tweeted that the date was later narrowed down to the July 2 slate, although the contracts are still being finalized.
Should the bout finally happen, it will end the rivalry between the UFC’s top two featherweight fighters. Holloway was in the third year of his reign as UFC featherweight champion when Voklanovski upset him at UFC 245 in a close bout clear win for the Australian. An immediate rematch was held at UFC 251 six months later and Volkanovski was declared the winner via split decision despite Holloway seemingly beating him in another close fight. Despite Voklanovski owning a 2-0 record against Holloway, there was heavy demand for a third fight.
Voklanovski has since successfully defended the belt twice. He defeated Briant Ortega via unanimous decision at UFC 266 in September 2021 before stopping the Korean Zombie at UFC 273 just last month. Meanwhile, Holloway is also 2-0 since their last meeting. Blessed defeated Calvin Kattar in an impressive striking clinic in January 2021 and then went on to defeat Yair Rodriguez in an absolute war which easily won Fight of the Night honors.

UFC 276 is scheduled for July 2, 2022, at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada, and will be held during the UFC’s 10th annual International Fight Week, where a Hall-of-Fame induction is also expected to take place. The event still doesn’t have a confirmed main event although there was a supposed leak of future fights exposed during UFC President Dana White’s appearance at The Pivot Podcast.
In that alleged leak, the middleweight title fight between Israel Adesanya and challenger Jared Cannonier was on top of the UFC 276 list. An interesting scrap between Khamzat Chimaev and Nate Diaz was also on the board as the second fight on the list, presumably the co-main event. Also on the “leak” were the confirmed bouts between Sean Strickland and Alex Pereira, Miesha Tate vs Lauren Murphy, and Sean O’Malley vs Pedro Munhoz.
It’s uncertain right now whether where the Volkanovski vs Holloway trilogy fight would fit in. It could either be the official main event with Adesanya vs Cannonier moved to the next event. Or it could be the co-main event of Adesanya-Cannonier with the Chimaev vs Diaz bout still being a rumor. Regardless, the third fight between Volk and MAx is one of the most anticipated bouts in the UFC today and those opening odds are bound to move once the bulk of the betting money starts coming in.
