- ONE Championship has been holding events in Asia since July.
- The promotion is set to hold its biggest fight card of the year tomorrow night.
- CEO Chatri Sityodtong claims we may soon see ONE Championship in the US.
ONE Championship is one of the world’s most popular mixed martial arts promotions. In early October, the promotion finally made its return to Kallang, Singapore. Many fans are now asking when we’ll see ONE Championship in the US.
The United States is still home to the largest MMA fan base on the planet. Many people here are looking forward to the day they can attend a ONE Championship event in person. Today, we’ll talk about when we might see ONE make its move into the US market.
Let’s get into it!
ONE FC Continues to Host its Events in Kallang, Singapore
Most agree that the UFC remains the biggest and best MMA leagues operating today. This promotion has champions from around the world. Its primary fan base lies in the United States and Europe, though.
Over in Asia, ONE Championship is growing more popular every single year. This promotion regularly holds its events throughout the continent. Of course, it was shut down for several months this year.
In June, the promotion finally began holding small events again in China. It then moved its operations to Bangkok, Thailand. Later on, this league officially made its return to Kallang, Singapore.
ONE Championship has been working hard to sign big-name fighters. Over the past few years, the company has acquired some of the top US MMA stars including Demetrious Johnson, Eddie Alvarez, and Sage Northcutt. ONE is even signing some of the world’s best jiu-jitsu practitioners such as Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida.
The sport of MMA is growing every single month. For now, ONE seems content to base its operations in Asia. CEO Chatri Sityodtong spoke to the media this week about when the promotion will finally touch down in the US.
Many are surprised to hear what Chatri has to say.
Chatri Sityodtong Claims We May Soon See ONE Championship in the US
Back in May, the UFC made history by becoming the first major sports league in the United States to begin operating again. It didn’t come easy, though. The promotion had to scrap several of its plans before finally settling its operations in Jacksonville, Florida.
Today, the UFC is holding events on a regular basis. It’s helped the sport to reach millions of individuals that were not previously fans of the sport. Of course, no fans are allowed to attend any of the events that the UFC is putting on.
Many believe that could change in the future. If things improve around the country, fans may finally be able to attend these events again. That will be great news for the promotions operating in the US.
Chatri Sityodtong spoke to the media this week about when we’ll finally see ONE Championship in the US. He claims the promotion would have likely made this move already if it were not for the events unfolding around the world. The CEO is also hinting that this move could be made in the future.
“It’s still in our plans,” he said. “We were anticipating our debut in the US before the pandemic hit, so obviously that put things on hold. [But] I’m hoping to revisit that, and see when’s the right time. The United States is going through its own difficult times right now with COVID, but also the riots and protests which have been violent. It’s a very tricky time in US history. We have an eye on that. It’s not just the COVID thing, but I would love to have an event in the US.”
There’s certainly a lot happening in the United States right now. It will take time before international MMA promotions will be interested in holding events here. Hopefully, things improve before too long.
ONE’s Biggest Event of 2020 Takes Place Tomorrow Night
There’s clearly a lot happening with ONE Championship right now. The promotion is committed to holding world-class events. Tomorrow night, ONE is set to hold its biggest event of the year featuring four different championship events.
Most fans are excited about the fight between Aung La Nsang and Reinier De Ridder. La Nsang has established himself as one of the best middleweights on the planet and is riding a seven-fight win streak right now. He faces a real test against 13-0 De Ridder in this one.
The ONE FC lightweight title fight between Christian Lee and Iuri Lapicus is also generating serious fan interest right now. Lee won the title against Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev in October of 2019. Most believe that he’ll get the victory over the relatively-unknown Arslanaliev tomorrow night.
Unfortunately, we haven’t come across any major US online sportsbooks that are offering odds on this event. Instead, most sites are offering odds on upcoming UFC and Bellator events. Perhaps if we begin seeing ONE Championship in the US, that could change.
ONE FC’s CEO claims this is in the works. For now, however, it’s simply impossible. We’ll need to wait and see how things unfold in the country before more international promotions begin working to break into the market.
