Yankees Head to All-Star Break With Unassailable Division Odds

Yankees Odds To Win Division

  • The New York Yankees are now a massive -10000 to win the AL East Division.
  • New York heads to the All-Star break with a 64-28 record, the best in the majors.
  • The Yankees are also 13 games ahead of their closest pursuers in the division standings, with the Tampa Bay Rays at 51-41 at the break.

The New York Yankees have made an impressive turnaround in the first half of the 2022 MLB season,

New York was just 46-43 heading to the All-Star break last season. The Yankees were just 4th in the AL East team standings, 8 games behind their rival Boston Red Sox. This year, they are 36 games over the .500 mark, their second-most games over .500 at the All-Star break, trailing the 61-20 1998 Yankees.

With such an impressive start, the Yankees have moved to the top of the World Series betting boards and now have a 99% implied probability to win their division.

Yankees Dominating “Loaded Division”

At the start of the current season, the question that experts asked was if the Yankees can stay atop a “loaded division”. The Yankees opened with +200 odds to win the AL East and saw their odds shorten to -105 after a strong 20-8 start. But at that stage of the season, the 17-13 Blue Jays and the 18-12 Rays were still within striking distance in the betting boards at +160 and +500, respectively. But at the All-Star break, the Yankees have built a seemingly insurmountable lead, both in the team standings and at the odds boards.

Sure, the AL East is still considered a loaded division with all teams at least at the .500 mark at the Break. But the second-place Rays are 51-41 and the third-place Blue Jays are 50-43 right now and are a massive 13 and 14.5 games behind the Yankees in the division standings. With how the way the Yankees have been playing in the first half of the season, it’s hard to see any of their division rivals catching up. The best betting sites agree.

After entering the current month with a -2000 odds to win the AL East, the Yankees are now an unassailable -10000 to win the division or a 99% implied win probability at most of the top MLB betting sites. The Blue Jays and Rays are very far behind them at +4000 and +500 respectively. Looking at the Yankees’ body of work during the first half of the season, you can’t argue with the oddsmakers.

Yankees Finish First Half With a 64-28 Record

At 64-28, the Yankees have the best record in baseball this season and the fifth-best winning percentage at the All-Star break in the Expansion Era or since 1961. At .696, only the 2001 Seattle Mariners who were at .724 ( 63-24 record ) have been better than the 2022 Yankees at the All-Star break this century.

But that’s not it. New York’s +199 run differential is also the best in MLB as is their 5.40 runs per game scoring average. The Yankees also rank 1st in the majors with 157 home runs this season. They are also first overall in OPS and WAR at .766 and 37.9, respectively. Here’s one more: New York’s 3.24 runs per game allowed this season is also tops in Major League baseball.

New York is just three games better than the L.A. Dodgers for the best record in baseball and is 4.5 games ahead of the Houston Astros in the race for the top of the American League standings but as far as division standings are concerned, the Yankees are 13 games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East, the largest lead among all division leaders at the All-Star break.
