Aaron Judge drove home the winning run with a one-out single in the ninth inning of the Yankees 1-0 win over the visiting Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday. The Yankees finished the season with a 92-70 record and head to their fifth consecutive postseason appearance.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the fifth inning to beat the Washington Nationals 7-5 on the road. Boston held Washington scoreless from that point, tying the game in the 7th inning, and taking the lead for good on a two-run home run by slugger Rafael Devers in the 9th.
The day began with several possible outcomes with tiebreaker scenarios involving the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays. Seattle and Toronto needed to win on Sunday and hoped that either Boston or New York lose to have a chance. But the stars from the Red Sox and Yankees came through and we end up with the simplest outcome: The Red Sox and Yankees in a blockbuster wild card game.
