The Georgia Dome in Atlanta will be the site of an NFC matchup featuring two teams going in opposite directions to start the season. The Atlanta Falcons come into the game at 2-1 (2-1ATS), while the San Francisco 49ers are 0-3 (1-2 ATS). Kickoff is set for 1 PM EST.
San Francisco had high hopes coming into the season but has looked abysmal so far this year. They have been embarrassed in two of their games – the opener in Seattle and last week in Kansas City when they were trounced 31-10. This led to the 49ers’ decision to fire their offensive co-ordinator in the hopes of jump starting the team. Their problems have been widespread but poor play at the quarterback position has been a big culprit in their awful start. Alex Smith has thrown for 732 yards on the season but has just 2 touchdown passes against 5 interceptions. The team as a whole has struggled to score putting up 12.7 points per game, which ranks 31st in the NFL. Meanwhile, they are dead last in the league, allowing 29 points per game to opponents.
Atlanta, on the other hand, has looked very sharp this season and may well be a legitimate contender in the NFC. After a tough overtime loss to open the season, the Falcons pounded the Cardinals in Week 2. They followed it up last week with an impressive 27-24 overtime win over the defending champion New Orleans Saints. QB Matt Ryan has been very efficient thus far in the season throwing for 705 yards and 5 touchdowns, with just 1 pick. The offense has also run the ball extremely well, averaging 160.3 yards per game on the season, good for 2nd in the NFL. The Falcons are also 6th in points scored and allowed through 3 weeks.

49ers vs. Falcons Prediction for Week 4:
Spread Prediction (TOP PLAY) – The 49ers have arguably been the worst team in the league through 3 weeks, while the Falcons look completely in sync already. In their matchup last season, Atlanta pounded San Francisco 45-10. Atlanta has taken 6 of their last 7 games ATS overall and are 6-1 in their last 7 ATS as a home favorite. Meanwhile, San Francisco has lost 6 of their last 7 ATS on the road. I personally don’t think they are capable of winning anywhere right now and firing their offensive co-ordinator isn’t likely to pay dividends immediately.
Game Total Prediction – San Francisco has been getting shredded on defense this season, allowing 29 points per game. Turnovers by the offense have contributed to this problem, but overall the 49ers are struggling to stop teams. The Falcons can hurt you with Michael Turner or Jason Snelling on the ground and QB Matt Ryan doesn’t make many mistakes throwing the football. I expect the Falcons to put up their share of points in this one but I don’t think the 49ers can match it. Under is 6-2-1 in the 49ers last 9 games and 7-2 in Atlanta’s last 9.
