Atlanta Falcons vs. San Francisco 49ers Pick – NFL Week 15

The Atlanta Falcons are on the west coast at Levi’s Stadium in Week 15. They are coming off a 29-21 win over the Carolina Panthers last weekend in Charlotte.

Matt Ryan was steady with 190 yards and a touchdown, while Cordarrelle Patterson gained 58 yards and a score on the ground. The Falcons didn’t make mistakes, while the Panthers ran into mistakes all game.

Cam Newton threw an interception, and P.J. Walker did the same on 6-12 passing. The defense had a strong attempt, with more interceptions left on the field.

Atlanta had a chance to reel in more interceptions but had a couple of drops or three in that one. Credit the Falcons’ defense for coming to play in what was an important outing.

Don’t look now, but the Falcons are still in the NFC playoff race at 6-7. They could steal a wildcard and get into the postseason with a strong push at the end of the year.

I don’t see the Falcons as bad as public perception has it. They aren’t great, but have shown improvement over last year.

The 49ers are in the mix with the Falcons in the NFC race. San Francisco is the same with a record of 6-7 going into Sunday. In any case, the 49ers are being hyped up after a 26-23 win on the road at Cincinnati last week.

That was a big win for the 49ers versus a formidable foe on the road. It was a scrappy attempt which consisted of passing the ball up to George Kittle and coming down with it.

This probably isn’t the best for the 49ers to go back home to Levi’s Stadium. They’ve been a better group on the road, with Levi’s Stadium not much a homefield advantage in Santa Clara.

Falcons vs. 49ers Prediction:

Jimmy Garoppolo has passed for 2,937 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions on 66.7% completions going into Week 15. He’s comfortably in the driver’s seat as QB1 after the 49ers danced between Trey Lance and Jimmy G early on in the season.

That’s the right decision, as Garoppolo is at least decent enough to lead the offense. Lance has talent, but still raw and needs time to develop. The 49ers could use Lance as trade bait if they’re confident in Garoppolo, who at 30 years old has miles left on his legs.

San Francisco is 12th in the NFL with 364.3 yards per game. They’ve scored a solid 25.3 points per game going into Week 15. Inconsistency has plagued the 49ers often this season, though. The 49ers haven’t gotten to 25.3 points on a straight smooth line.

It’s been up and down for the Niners. Their best work has come on the road, where they’ve averaged around 10 yards more than their season total. The 49ers can’t sleep on the Falcons who’ve been playing more competitive football since a 25-0 loss to the New England Patriots.

Atlanta Falcons vs. San Francisco 49ers Betting Trends:

  • 5-1 ATS in their previous six games on the road
  • 5-1 ATS in their previous six games in Week 15
  • 6-3 overall in their previous nine games versus the 49ers
  • UNDER is 5-2 in their previous seven games
  • UNDER is 5-2 in their previous seven games after a win

  • 4-1 ATS in their previous five games
  • 5-11 ATS in their previous 16 games as a favorite
  • 2-5 ATS in their previous seven games as a favorite
  • 4-10 ATS in their previous 14 games at Levi’s Stadium
  • 16-34-1 ATS in their previous 51 games as a favorite at Levi’s Stadium

The 49ers are a brisk 2-4 this season home in Santa Clara. Levi’s Stadium might have the most uninspiring homefield advantage in the NFL. This isn’t what it was like at Candlestick Park.

The stadium was much more accessible with a different kind of fans attending games. It isn’t all suits, there are still diehards there, but the environment is a whole lot more stale than Candlestick used to be.

Atlanta has been coming along and rookie tight end Kyle Pitts has played a big role in making the Falcons a more competitive team this season. His presence changes everything for opposing defenses.

While he doesn’t always put up monster numbers, defenses must honor him and have to shift resources to where he is on the field. Kittle is one of the current great tight ends in the NFL, while Pitts is the future at tight end in the league.

Pitts goes into Santa Clara with 770 yards and a touchdown on 54 receptions. He made a critical reception last week to help put the Panthers away late in the 4th quarter. The Falcons as a team are 24th in the NFL with 316.4 yards per game.

The 49ers worry me after a big win in Cincinnati. That was a tough physical game that had to take something out of the 49ers. And we’ve seen it before with this team, they can look like a contender one week and struggle in the next instance.

The Falcons are right there with the 49ers at 6-7 in the NFC. They have something to play for on the west coast. This isn’t a game where they’re just attempting to play spoiler.

Double digits looks like a lot of points to lay at a place where the 49ers don’t look to cover point spreads. I’m backing the Falcons as underdogs to make this a more competitive competition than most people are anticipating at Levi’s Stadium.
