Bills vs. Lions Pick – NFL Preseason September 3rd

In the most pointless of preseason games for the starters, the Detroit Lions play host to the Buffalo Bills at Ford Field. The Lions are looking forward to the start of the season where they look to avenge that loss in the playoffs against the Cowboys last season. Matthew Stafford looked deep for Brandon Pettigrew, Pettigrew got interfered with, the flag came out, and then the flag got picked up after they announced the call. It was one of the biggest shams I have seen. With no other games to play, the Lions had to look forward to this season.

They’ll wrap up the preseason tonight against the Buffalo Bills. The Lions enter the 2015 season armed with their usual suspects on offense, including Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson, and Golden Tate. The Lions have may have very well got lucky in the draft when they took Ameer Abdullah. He’s looked great running the ball and looks to be a legitimate threat in the Lions’ backfield. The Lions have been bit by the injury bug at the running back position recently. Abdullah, out of Nebraska, has been able to stay healthy throughout his career. Maybe he’ll get the Lions out of that cycle and become a productive member of the backfield, a luxury Matthew Staffod would adore.

Rex Ryan is pretty convinced the Buffalo Bills have a special team heading into the 2015 regular season. Well, with Rex Ryan that goes without saying he is confident. Is that confidence justified with the Bills this season? The defense should be playing good football, but their offense leaves a lot to be desired. There was some controversy over the release of long time back Fred Jackson. He won’t be with the Bills this season which removes a veteran leader, I believe, from the roster. His skill set has been slowly going down, but he still has a presence in the locking room, something the Bills will be without now. Let’s finish the preseason up strong with a winner before we get to the meat and potatoes of the NFL next week in week 1.

Bills vs. Lions Pick:

While Matthew Stafford is sitting comfortable in the starting role in Detroit, there is some competition going on behind him. Although, Dan Orlovsky has thoroughly beaten Kellen Moore for the backup job, so it seems. Moore has seen some good play in the preseason throughout his career, but this season nothing has really clicked for him. For a guy with the lack of arm strength that he has, he needs to make up for it with pinpoint accuracy and decision making. And while Moore is an accurate passer, he hasn’t been able to find a rhythm here this preseason. So, the better question here is if he is going to be around with the Lions following cuts, and not if he is going to best Orlovsky for the backup spot.

The Bills seem to be going with Tyrod Taylor as the starter for the upcoming season who claimed that spot after going 12-13 last week with 122 yards passing. Manuel played great as well, passing for 170 yards. It looked like Matt Cassel was going to have those honors in Buffalo this season, but the guy may not even end up making the team. At this point if Taylor slips up, we’ll see Manuel get the opportunity to claim the spot. I believe the leash is going to be short with Taylor. Despite having a trio of quarterbacks that could all potentially start for the Bills, none of them are actually good enough to turn the Bills’ offense into a threat. However, for the purposes of the preseason the situation isn’t so bad. After Taylor was announced as the starter, there has to be a chip on the shoulder of Manuel and Cassel heading into this game. There are also rumors of Cassel getting cut, which then he will be playing to show teams he isn’t done yet tonight. I expect the Lions to play more conservative football than the Bills tonight. Rex Ryan will look to be going into the regular season with confidence instilled in his team. Take the Bills on a small bet.
