While it hasn’t been the best of starts to the year for us thus far, we’ve just crossed the half-way point and a lot of football is left to play. This year it seems like typical long-term losing selections are winning with more regularity, and whether that is a continuing trend or not remains to be seen. Let’s hope not! One of the most important fixtures this week will take place in Foxboro as Peyton Manning and his Denver Broncos travel to take on the New England Patriots. It’s about as marquee of a match-up as you can get in the NFL and it promises to be an exciting affair. New England has reeled off four straight wins since their blowout at Arrowhead by Kansas City, but whether they’re great enough to take on the Broncos remains highly in doubt. Denver enters Week 9 as the premier team in the NFL, and my personal selection to win this year’s Super Bowl. As they enter with an extra half-week of rest, last playing in the Thursday game of Week 8, they’ll face a stern test from the Patriots in what promises to be a thrilling encounter. Broncos vs. Patriots Pick:
Despite the recent resurgence from Tom Brady and his Patriots, they’re still nowhere near the realm that the Broncos are in. This is still a squad with some glaring holes, and while their play has improved significantly, I can’t help but think they’re in for a rude awakening today at Foxboro. While the majority of pundits will point to the fact that New England’s improved secondary will limit Manning, I’m not so sure. Sure Darelle Revis and Brandon Browner are excellent at their position, but without a legitimate pass rush, Manning will have all day to surgically pick that secondary apart. New England won’t have Chandler Jones or Jerod Mayo available, and I really cannot see any of their defensive players being able to consistently pressure Manning. As a result expect a big day from #18, as well as surprising running back Ronnie Hillman.
For the New England offense, it’s no secret that Tom Brady has silenced the doubters and has been excellent in recent weeks. In his past four games, he’s thrown for 14 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. But that said, he’s done it against vastly inferior opposition and unlike Manning, he’ll actually be facing a ferocious pass rush this week. Look for DeMarcus Ware and Von Miller to be all over Brady in this one. Together the duo has already combined for 16 sacks this season and they should add to that total today. This is the same defense that brought down Kaepernick six times, so they should be able to disrupt Brady’s rhythm with regularity.
Denver is as complete of a team in football as there currently is. Their defense gives up nothing vs. the run and they’ll be all over Brady today hurting the aerial attack. Manning has thrived in his career with additional rest and prep time, and that should pay off again today. Too much is being made of the Patriots recent string of play, but Denver’s been doing it all year, and in dominant fashion. While it’s tempting to look at Belichick and Brady as home underdogs, these teams are in different leagues, and look for the Broncos to make that statement on Sunday.
PICK = Broncos -3 (-115)
