Cardinals vs. Lions Pick – NFL Week 5

Fresh off a soul-crushing Week 5 defeat at the hands of both the referees and the Seattle Seahawks, the Detroit Lions return to the field this week as the only team yet to record a victory in the NFL this season.  Last week would have definitely been a monumental upset of Monday Night Football, but some final second shenanigans prevented that from occurring.  Now they’ll return home to take on a very solid Arizona Cardinals team that can beat you in a multitude of different ways.  Arizona has to also be seething over losing last week at home to the Rams in the final few minutes, and they know that in the NFC West there’s very little margin for error.  Follow along as these teams try and get back on track and read on below for a prediction and a full game breakdown between the Cardinals and the Lions!

Cardinals vs. Lions Pick:

The Cards enter this game surely an unhappy bunch.  If they are to contend for a post-season spot in the competitive NFC West, they can’t let games like last week just slip away – especially at home where they are dominant.  Carson Palmer’s offense was sloppy against an inferior Rams squad and now they’ll look to take out their frustrations on a winless Lions team.  Expect a much better and more focused group in Detroit in Week 5.  For starters, Palmer will no longer need to deal with that aggressive Rams pass rush, and the Cardinals should have more time to establish their explosive offense in familiar dome-like conditions at Ford Field in Detroit.

Detroit is also dealing with a fair amount of injuries on the defensive side of the ball.  They lost Haloti Ngata, Tyrunn Walker and Darius Slay on Monday night against the Seahawks and without that trio, stopping Palmer and the Cards will be even more difficult.

On the other side of the ball, you’ve got to wonder about the current mindset of the Detroit Lions.  They aren’t that bad of a team – certainly nowhere near as bad as they were in that winless season a few years back, but you have to wonder where their confidence level is at.  They played a great game on Monday vs. the Seahawks and couldn’t come through, and now need to regroup on short rest for a very good Cardinals team that enters a motivated and hungry group after a frustrating defeat of their own.

Detroit played well but that’s not going to last this week.  Matt Stafford has been pretty awful this year, and it would surprise nobody if he committed multiple turnovers  against a very formidable Arizona stop unit.  The Cards will be all over Stafford today as the Lions offensive line provides virtually no resistance, and that will force the former Georgia Bulldog into mistakes, hurries, and turnovers.  Look for a poor outing again from the Lions offense.

Detroit will win a game this season, but it won’t be in Week 5 against an excellent Arizona Cardinals team.  The Cards love playing in domes and it suits their team well, so look for another great offensive outing from Carson Palmer and his plethora of weapons.  Only having to lay a field goal with some juice is a solid line in such a talent mismatch, so roll with the motivated Cardinals to get back on track today.
