Colts vs. Giants Week 2 NFL Pre-Season Pick

After last night’s big winner with the Seahawks -5, we’re back at it again today at The Sports Geek trying to build your bankroll before the NFL’s regular season gets underway. Our record is now an even .500 through the exhibition games thus far, and hopefully we can improve on that in the lone pre-season game of the day between the Indianapolis Colts and the New York Giants. Both squads have healthy playoff aspirations, and are led by two of the game’s top quarterbacks in Eli Manning and Andrew Luck. The Colts will be searching for a better defensive outing today, after getting routed by the Buffalo Bills last week. Buffalo’s quick-strike attack gave Indy a wealth of problems, and if their defense doesn’t shore up, last year’s problems could again derail a lengthy post-season run. They were so bad that Colts’ owner Jim Irsay took to Twitter to rip the performance of his players. For the Giants, the Manning-to-Cruz connection was in fine form against the Steelers as the duo teamed up for a pretty 57-yard touchdown pass, and they’ll be looking to build on that when they host the Colts tonight.

Colts at Giants Pick:

After last week’s dismal outing from the Colts, it is believed that their starters will play well into the second quarter, and perhaps get the entire half. The targeted number for Chuck Pagano’s squad are 25-30 snaps, after receiving only ten last week against the Bills.

For New York, head coach Tom Coughlin has stated that his starters will play for ‘about 20 plays.’ They are also slated to receive some relief on the injury front as all of Hakeem Nicks, Justin Tuck, and new first-rounder Justin Pugh will make their pre-season debuts. New York however will be missing some key starters in the secondary, as Terrell Thomas remains hurt, and Antrel Rolle sprained his ankle and will hope he’ll be ready for the commencement of the regular season.

The Colts too don’t have a clean bill of health either. Their already dismal defensive group will be missing free safety LaRon Landry, while former-Giant Ahmad Bradshaw is also expected to sit this one out. Despite the knocks picked up, expect a better outing from Indy tonight. After being called out by their owner, and head coach, the Colts know better is expected from them, despite it just being the pre-season. As a result, Luck and his fellow starters should play for much of the first half, while the reliable veteran Matt Hasselbeck will play for pretty much the entire third quarter. That’s an impressive quarterback rotation, and one the Giants back-ups may be ill-equipped to handle.

While the Colts’ starters are getting a long look today, Eli and company will only play 20 snaps, and the tandem of David Carr and Ryan Nassib that will follow really leaves something to be desired. It doesn’t seem like the Giants are taking this clash as seriously as the Colts are. It may seem silly, but the Colts are the much more motivated group entering this contest tonight. They invested heavily in new players in the off-season, mainly on defense, and they’ll be determined to prove last week’s game was not an indication of what’s to come. Expect the Colts to get off to a roaring start under Andrew Luck, and allow Matt Hasselbeck to finish off the job in the second half. With the Colts currently getting points, they represent solid value this evening.

PICK = Colts +2 (-115)
