The Dallas Cowboys come off getting beat down by the Patriots two weeks ago and a bye week to face their rivals on the road, the New York Giants. The Cowboys turn to Matt Cassel after Brandon Weeden couldn’t win a game. Owner Jerry Jones said he was confident in Weeden weeks ago, and actually said he has the best arm in the NFL. Uh, kay, about that. Now with the Brandon Weeden experiment presumably over (knock on wood to a Matt Cassel injury), Cassel is in a familiar position he was in with the Patriots, having to take over for a franchise quarterback. If you recall, Tom Brady blew his knee out five years ago and Cassel was his backup. Cassel filled in to do a pretty good job, but they failed to make the postseason with 10 wins on the season. He’ll need to fill in for Tony Romo this week. Cassel hasn’t had much time to learn the Cowboys’ offense. He had the week he arrived and then the bye week. It was a nice time for the Cowboys to have a bye week that’s for sure.
The Cowboys need more than a game manager, and that is what Weeden and Cassel are. On a team with a really good defense they’d be okay, but the Cowboys need a guy that can make some plays. They need some playmakers on the field. There wasn’t much for Weeden to go with the ball and Cassel is going to find the same problems against the Giants today. They also just lost Lance Dunbar to injury, which leaves the running back duties to Joseph Randle and Darren McFadden. Okay, well, those are great supplement backs on a good team, but not who you want running the ball all game long. This division is still up for grabs, it feels like no one really wants to takeover and run the table. If Romo was healthy I’m sure this would be the Cowboys to lose, but injuries are part of sports and they need to go to plan B. However, even after all of that they are still alive. The Cowboys at 2-3 and Giants 3-3 will look to take this rivalry battle and pick up a much needed win against a division opponent in a tight race.

Cowboys vs. Giants Pick:
I can say one thing, if I need to see another highlight of the Odell Beckham catch I am going to throw up. Naturally we will see it three or four times on the pre-game show. If anything, Odell Beckham needs to step up now. He got banged up against the Eagles and had to sit out some plays. Beckham also sat out practice this week. He is expected to play today against the Cowboys. In other words, from just reading this article, you can come to the conclusion that there are injuries and bumps and bruises all over the place in this game. I really wish both teams were at full strength, as this series usually produces good games. Not really sure what to expect entertainment wise today, but at the end of the day, all we want to do is cash in.
The story of this game is Matt Cassel, though. How is he going to play? If he plays well the Cowboys can win this game, if he doesn’t it’ll be the same result as Brandon Weeden had. Cassel hasn’t taken a snap this season. He got cut by the Buffalo Bills after an awful preseason. Last season with the Vikings he passed for 3 touchdowns and 4 interceptions in relief of Teddy Bridgewater. The year prior to that he had 11 touchdowns and 9 picks. I truly thought the guy was done after a putrid stint in Kansas City, but he showed up in Minnesota, and is now trying to resurrect the Dallas offense with Romo on the sidelines.
The Giants are beatable in the passing game, but I don’t think the Cowboys have the weapons to do so. Eli Manning should have a nice game against a defense that is allowing 26.2 points per game. The Giants really don’t want to get embarrassed again and lose to Cassel after that showing against the Eagles on Monday night. Cassel shouldn’t have that much of a grip on the offense that quickly. I like the Giants to win by a touchdown and cover the spread.
PICK: GIANTS -3 (-110)
