Cowboys vs. Seahawks Pick – NFL Preseason Week 3

The Dallas Cowboys take their show on the road to the west coast in Seattle to face the Seahawks. The Cowboys have fond memories of Seattle, a place where they defeated the Seahawks at home in 2014. This was during a time where the Seahawks were just unbeatable at home. Nobody was going into Seattle and walking away with a win, but much to the surprise of everybody, the Cowboys beat the Hawks for a 30-23 win. It was a rare slip-up for the Seahawks at home, with the only other big shocker coming on the Fail Mary loss against the Green Bay Packers.

The stakes aren’t quite as high on Thursday, with it being a preseason game and all. This is Week 3 of the NFL Preseason, where teams take it a bit more serious. Most teams view it as a dress rehearsal and the preview to the regular season. Week 4 of the preseason is nothing more than a game for backups looking to make the team. So, this is about as real as it’ll get before Week 1.

The story of the preseason for the Cowboys has been the performance of rookie quarterback, Dak Prescott. Prescott backed up his play from the first week of the season, with another stellar outing against the Miami Dolphins last week. There were no setbacks, as Prescott rolled the Dolphins for 2 touchdowns and 199 yards passing on 12 of 15 passing. He also rushed for 28 yards on the day. Prescott has showed no faults in his game, but we have to keep in mind that this is still the preseason.

He looks like a guy that will make a great backup for Tony Romo, sorry Kellen Moore for getting injured, but we don’t have enough real game action to go by to ascertain if he’s for real or not. Preseason defenses do not open up their playbooks, they keep it very vanilla. Thus, we’ll have to see Prescott in the regular season before we come to any grand conclusions. I do know one thing though, he did carry Mississippi State and he has carried the Cowboys through the preseason. If Romo gets injured again, which seems pretty possible we’ll get a good look at him. The Seahawks will be able to get a good look at him in this third game of the preseason.

Cowboys vs. Seahawks Pick:

Combined with his first appearance, Prescott has thrown for 338 yards, 4 touchdowns, and no interceptions. He’s also only missed five passes. This might be his most difficult start yet in the preseason. Prescott should get a healthy amount of work in this game, as I don’t see Romo taking the controls too far into the third quarter, if he comes out for the second-half at all. If I were running the Cowboys, I would have him play a quarter and sit him down. He is 36 years old and susceptible to injury. The Cowboys aren’t playing against the nicest defense, regardless if it’s the preseason or not. Romo looked fine against the Dolphins, completing 4 of 5 passes for 49 yards.

Prescott has a little Russell Wilson in him, but he has a ways to go before he gets to that level. We expect Wilson and the starters to play the first-half. Then it will be Prescott against Trevon Boykin, which feels like a quality college matchup when you hear those two names. Boykin, a rookie out of TCU, tore up defenses as a collegiate athlete and is now getting an opportunity in the NFL. Boykin looked really good in preseason game number 1, passing for 188 yards and a touchdown. He tapered off in the second preseason game, completing 10 of 20 passes with an interception.

The thing that has really jumped out to me in this game is the spread. All of the attention is on Dak Prescott, and the bookmakers know that. People have Romo riding the pine and Prescott pegged as a starter. The public is on the Cowboys in this game for that very reason, but the odds makers are thinking differently. If they thought the Cowboys were going to compete, I would think they would set this line at 3 or 2.5 in favor of the Seahawks. Instead they are 5 point favorites. Something smells here. I think we see Prescott struggle for the first time in the NFL, and he gets a rude welcome to Seattle in his first game there.

PICK: SEAHAWKS -5 (-110)
