The QB carousel continues to swirl in Philadelphia, with Kevin Kolb now in line to start in place of an injured Michael Vick, while 49ers fans wish there was someone on their roster worthy of forcing a QB controversy. The (2-2) Philadelphia Eagles travel to the west coast to tangle with the (0-4) 49ers in what is an ultimate must win game for San Francisco. The 49ers are very much still capable of turning things around and getting back into the lowly NFC West picture but a win on Sunday night is a must. Kevin Kolb will look to commence a strong tenure at the pivot position and fend off any chances of Vick retaining the helm, a strong showing at Candlestick Park might be just the ticket, kickoff slated for 8:20 PM EST.
And the roller coaster ride the Philadelphia Eagles are currently on keeps on going. After two weeks of QB Michael Vick minding the helm, QB Kevin Kolb will get entrusted back into the position as Vick went down last week with an apparent rib injury. Washington got the best of the Eagles on the scoreboard in last week’s 17-12 loss, but I would hardly call this game a testament that trading Donovan McNabb in the off-season was a huge mistake. If you breakdown the Eagles offensive numbers, they are ranked 12th in passing, 11th in rushing, and eighth in total yards and points per game. There is a much better balance between the pass and the run and once Michael Vick and LeSean McCoy are healthy, they will be back to full strength. In the meantime, Kevin Kolb will get his job back for at least Sunday night’s game against the 49ers as the Eagles try to get by without two of their biggest offensive stars against a team that is 0-4, but still very dangerous at home. At this point, a win in this game would be a bonus and do not be surprised if Philly is still tied for the lead in the division even if they lose this one.
The San Francisco 49ers have to be one of the biggest disappointments of this early season as many analysts had them being the kings of the NFC West, instead they are winless going into week 5. QB Alex Smith already has 7 interceptions on the year and many doubt that he will be able to maintain his starting role for the duration of the entire season. RB Frank Gore is still a lethal threat out of the backfield for the 49ers and he has been also quite successful this year through the air. Gore leads the team in receptions with 29 grabs for 216 yards. Second string RB Brian Westbrook will be facing his former team and should be given a healthy amount of snaps. San Francisco has lost its last two games against Philadelphia by a combined 53 points. McNabb passed for 296 yards and two touchdowns, and Westbrook ran for 117 and two scores in the Eagles’ 38-24 victory the last time the teams met Sept. 24, 2006.

Eagles vs 49ers Prediction for Week 5:
Game Total Prediction (TOP PLAY) – These two teams need wins for slightly different reasons on Sunday night. The Eagles need a win to keep pace in the highly competitive NFC East, while the 49ers need their first win to get back into the chase for the weak NFC West crown. In my research, I have observed that games involving a winless team and a team coming off a loss to a divisional opponent hit the OVER 72 times out of 107 games since 2000. The 49ers are no stranger to prime time games and they seem to find a fifth wheel when the lights are on. San Francisco has hit the OVER on their prime time games 9 times out of 12 games since 2000. The total has gone OVER in 5 of Philadelphia’s last 7 games when playing on the road against San Francisco. The total has gone OVER in 5 of Philadelphia’s last 6 games when playing San Francisco. I believe QB Kevin Kolb for the Eagles is a viable pivot and he will be able to lead his team into the Redzone on more then one occasion on Sunday night, as with his counterpart QB Alex Smith who needs a strong outing to maintain his position. We will look for a game that finds the OVER, there is too much at stake for this game to be a defensive struggle.
Spread Prediction – The 49ers have a really good shot at grabbing their first victory of the season on Sunday night. They are facing a team that is coming off of a dismal loss to a divisional opponent and they are going to be throwing ex-starter Kevin Kolb back into the lineup. The Eagles are undoubtedly one of the most overrated teams this year, Philadelphia is 1-6 ATS in its last 7 games. After two dismal weeks, the 49ers seem to be figuring things out and are playing better ball. They have had two very impressive outings against powerhouses in the Saints and Falcons, each game in which they could have won but covered nonetheless. San Francisco is 8-3 ATS when playing on a Sunday or Monday night since 2000 and are 5-0 ATS playing on a Sunday night at home since 2000. The betting public are all over the underdog Eagles in this one, but I will consider the 49ers covering this spread and earning their first win of the early season and also getting back into the thick of things in the weak NFC West. Cheers!
