Two teams really headed in opposite directions will square off on Sunday with a lot on the line for both teams. It’s been quite the unexpected start to the season for new head coach Todd Bowles and his New York Jets team. The Jets looked great last week in shutting down the explosive Colts and now they’ll be tasked to do the same thing against an equally explosive Eagles squad looking to prove all the naysayers wrong. For Philly, the hype machine was in full force in the pre-season, with new quarterback Sam Bradford garnering rave reviews. Through two games, Philly is 0-2, and had a pathetic showing at home last week against an undermanned Cowboys team. Chip Kelly’s team struggled mightily on offense and if things don’t turn around soon, the worrying cries are only going to get louder in the city of Brotherly Love. The Eagles need a strong showing in Week 3 and read on below to find out my thoughts on this struggling team, as well as my official prediction for Philly and the Jets!

Eagles vs. Jets Pick:
Prior to Week 3 kicking off, this line had the Eagles as 3.5-point favourites, so to see them entering today as nearly field-goal underdogs, seems to me like a slight overreaction. Sure the New York Jets were downright impressive last week vs. the Colts, but they’re getting an angry Eagles squad that has the potential for explosiveness in an almost must-win scenario. Very few teams have more talent than Philadelphia in the NFL, and I think you’ll see that on full display on Sunday.
Buy-low, sell-high; a basic economic principle that can be directly applied to this contest today. The Eagles are at their lowest, and I cannot imagine the Jets vaulting any higher than this point in 2015. The Eagles struggled offensively last week, mostly on their offensive line, but look for Chip Kelly to make some adjustments with regard to protection. Kelly knows he needs to give Bradford more time and space in the pocket to properly utilize all of his weapons, and if he can do that, this Eagles offense can soar once again. The Jets did show some vulnerabilities last week against the run game of the Colts, so that is something that should be encouraging for Philly in Week 3. DeMarco Murray is still one of the game’s most talented backs, and should turn in a solid performance against the Jets. With Murray doing his thing, look for the game to open up for Bradford through the air. It is expected that Darelle Revis will play, but is apparently nowhere near 100% today. Look for Darren Sproles to be huge in this contest, as throwing deep on the Jets’ secondary could prove difficult. Lots of play-action calls, and short dump-offs to Sproles could gash this Jets defense, and Chip Kelly is well aware of this.
On the defensive side for Philly, they may catch a break in not having to deal with a fully healthy Chris Ivory rumbling out of the backfield. The powerful running back is listed as questionable and though he should play, his impact and snap-count will likely be limited. This will put even more of an onus on the terrible Ryan Fitzpatrick to beat the Eagles through the air. Yes, the Eagles secondary is vulnerable and definitely has some holes, but it’s clear that Ryan Fitzpatrick and his limited weapons aren’t the right unit to expose them. The Jets will get their points due to Philly’s defensive ineptitude, but the real question remains whether or not this group can keep pace with the Eagles’ revamped and highly motivated offense?
Overall, this is just a bad spot for the Jets. Fresh off a huge home victory under the bright lights on Monday Night Football, they’re now being asked on a quick turnaround to handle one of the game’s most explosive and high-tempo offenses. Oh, and let’s not forget they travel to England next week! When you factor in how motivated Kelly and the Eagles have to be, with 0-3 staring them in the face and a ridiculous overreaction in line movement, Philly as ‘dogs has to be the play here. This is a much better team than they’ve shown thus far, and I’ll happily buy-low on talent in Week 3.
PICK = Eagles +2.5 (-110)
