Is this the last we have seen of Michael Vick? After leaving last week against the Cowboys with a concussion, rumors are circulating that Vick is all but done in the NFL. It hasn’t just been injuries this year that have hindered Vick; he has turned the ball over on a consistent basis and played reckless football all season long. Whether his injury is a blessing in disguise for the Eagles is yet to be seen, but many called for rookie Nick Foles to start weeks before this upcoming game. Foles, out of the University of Arizona, is a big quarterback with a fairly strong arm. He has plenty of the intangibles to make an impact at this level. The first year rookie played extremely well in the preseason when he had time to prepare, so it will be interesting how he does against the Washington Redskins this week. After weeks of bliss under Robert Griffin, they have come down to earth recently. They are coming off a 21-13 loss to the Carolina Panthers two weeks ago, and currently are 3-6 in the NFC East.
The problem with the Redskins hasn’t been on RG3. While there have been bumps along the way for the talented rookie, he has done pretty much all he can to win games for the ‘Skins. If the Redskins had a respectable defense this would be a much different team, a much better team. I think the future could be kind to Redskins’ fans, but for the moment, they will continue to struggle without a respectable defense. The defense in a word is deplorable, most notably the pass defense, where they rank 30th against the pass allowing 301.7 yards per game. In regards to total team defense they are 29th, giving up a dismal 27.6 points a game. Once a team that relied on its defense the Redskins have completely flipped the script in the other direction. If it wasn’t for RG3 this could very well be a 1 win squad. Things got off on the wrong footing with the news that linebacker Brian Orakpo will be gone for the season, and it has just gone downhill from there. There is no question what the Redskins are addressing in the draft.
The offense, however, has been a gust of fresh air to this organization. RG3 has made Redskins’ fans excited about their team again, who have long desired a leader at quarterback. The ‘Skins last game before their bye week against the Panthers was a game they are going to want to forget, however. They only managed to put up 13 points against an average defense. Griffin finished with just 215 yards through the air and 53 yards rushing with no touchdowns. Has the rest of the NFL caught on to RG3, or was it just an off week for the young superstar? We are witnessing what is happening to Cam Newton after teams had some tape on the guy, so comparisons to Griffin and Newton have been plentiful. The offense still ranks 7th in the NFL, averaging 381 yards per game with 25.1 points. In other words they can explode for a bunch of points in any game.
They will be going against a disappointing defense, a unit that expected to be much better than they are. Don’t get me wrong, they aren’t bad compared to a lot of the other defenses out there in the NFL today, but being average is just not good enough for the Eagles considering their offense. This is a defense that is used to being in the top-5 consistently under the late Jim Johnson. In 2012 they rank 12th, giving up 338 yards a game and a lackluster 24 points a game.

Eagles vs. Redskins Pick:
The starting quarterback job for the rest of the season and into next year is definitely up for grabs in this game. If Nick Foles can go on the road and put together an impressive showing then people are going to start saying Vick who? Foles finished with 219 yards with a touchdown and interception after taking over for the injured Vick. Foles did not do a horrible job considering the spot he was in. Mind you, the Cowboys’ pass defense is one of the best in the league, so I was impressed with his play. With a week of practice under his belt, and playing against a horrendous pass defense, I think Foles is going to put together a nice game.
Redskins’ lines are predicated around RG3, his name alone has put the line in their favor all season long. Unfortunately for the Redskins the quarterback is not the only position on the field. I think Griffin will have a few more superb games before the end of the season, but I think the Eagles are going to play with a chip on their shoulders with a new quarterback at the helm. I just don’t believe that the Redskins’ defense is going to be a factor in this one, making it appear that Foles is the future savior of the Eagles. I’ll take the points with the Eagles in this spot.
PICK = Eagles +4
